Can ChatGPT or Claude draft your buyer DMs?
November 2, 2026 · 9 min read
Yes, ChatGPT and Claude can draft a reply to a buyer's DM, but neither app reads your Instagram, Facebook or TikTok inbox on its own. A tool has to fetch the message, hand it to the model and send the answer inside the platform's reply window. BetterSocials is the closest fit for a business owner who wants buyer DMs drafted in their own voice, Blotato suits people building their own Claude or ChatGPT agent, and Manychat suits flow-built funnels.
Which rules decide whether AI can answer a buyer's DM?
ChatGPT and Claude are only one of three gates. The other two are the platform's messaging rules and the plan you pay for, and each one has a number attached. We took the rules explainer angle for this report: the limits, the windows and the counts, each from published documentation and help pages, as of October 2026.
The short version is that the model writes the text and something else does the delivery. That something is either an inbox tool that connects your accounts or a script you build against the APIs. Both routes run into the same reply windows.
What ChatGPT and Claude can do without another tool
ChatGPT and Claude, used as chat apps, will write a reply when you paste in the buyer's message. That is copy and paste, and you send the result yourself. Neither app watches your DMs in the background.
Developers can call the models directly. The Claude Messages API and the OpenAI Responses API take a prompt and return text. They stop there. A server still has to receive Meta's webhook, which is the notice Meta sends when a new message arrives, call the model and post the reply back through Meta's messaging API.
The third route is a connector. MCP, the Model Context Protocol, is the open standard that lets an AI assistant use another product's tools. Claude allows custom connectors on Free, which gets one, and on Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise, where an Owner adds them on Team and Enterprise. Through a connector, Claude can read an inbox and send a reply when you tell it to.
ChatGPT is narrower. OpenAI's Help Center says "Full MCP (Model Context Protocol) support, including modify/write actions, is rolling out in beta to ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, and Edu plans." It adds that "Pro users can connect MCPs with read/fetch permissions in developer mode." Developer mode needs a paid plan and runs on the web only. In a normal chat, ChatGPT can read a connected inbox and suggest reply text, and sending stays with a Business, Enterprise or Edu workspace.
Meta's reply windows for Instagram and Messenger, plus TikTok and YouTube
Instagram lets an app send a DM only within 24 hours of the person's last message. After that, Meta rejects the send from any tool until the buyer writes again. Each new message from the buyer restarts the clock, and you can still answer by hand in the Instagram app, which has no window.
Meta also has a 7-day human reply window. It allows replies typed by a real person up to 7 days after the contact's last message, once Meta has approved that feature for the messaging connector an app uses. Automated messages never qualify, so an AI reply that sends on its own lives inside the 24 hours.
Comments follow a separate rule. Public comment replies have no time limit. A private reply to a comment is limited to one per comment, within 7 days of the comment being posted.
TikTok is reply-only. A business can never start a DM, and an app gets at most 10 replies within 48 hours of the person's last message. Each reply is text up to 6,000 characters or one image, never both, and the account must be a Business account. Apps can answer TikTok DMs only for accounts outside the UK and Europe.
YouTube has no DM API for any tool, so buyer conversations there happen in public comment replies. LinkedIn doesn't let any tool read LinkedIn DMs through the API.
Zapier's Instagram actions and what they cover
Zapier's blog shows Claude drafting Gmail replies automatically. Instagram is a different case. Zapier's MCP lists "Publish Photo(s)" and "Publish Video" for Instagram for Business, with no comment or DM actions. On Facebook Pages, "New Comment" is a trigger only, and there is no comment reply action.
The cost side, as of October 2026: Zapier MCP is included in every Zapier plan, and each MCP tool call uses 2 tasks. Free is 100 tasks a month. Pro starts at $19.99 a month billed annually, or $29.99 billed monthly, for 750 tasks.
So Zapier fits email drafting and posting. For buyer DMs on Instagram, you need a tool that holds the DM connection itself.
Keeping a person on the send button
BetterSocials and Meta Business Suite both build a pause or an approval step into automated replies. The safe default for buyer DMs is draft first, approve second. A buyer asking about a price or a booking is a sale in progress, and the answer has to be right.
Three settings carry most of the risk:
- Rules are the plain sentences that hold your facts, such as prices, hours and the booking link, so a draft answers from them instead of guessing.
- An approval step means nothing reaches the buyer until a person sends it.
- A fallback sends questions the rules don't cover to a person instead of letting the model improvise.
Meta's own keyword automations in Meta Business Suite take a cautious line too. They send templates you write, or Meta Business Agent, are set up on desktop, and wait 15 minutes before sending unless you reply first.
AI DM tools in 2026, by how they handle buyer replies
BetterSocials is our pick for a business owner who wants buyer DMs drafted in their own voice across Instagram, Facebook and TikTok. Blotato and Composio suit people who want Claude or ChatGPT to do the work through an agent. Manychat suits funnels built from flows, and Meta Business Suite costs nothing.
Prices below are as of October 2026, from each vendor's pricing or help pages.
| Tool | Entry price | Billing | DM method | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BetterSocials | $29 a month, 4 accounts | Monthly, or $24 yearly | AI drafts in your voice | Owners answering buyer DMs |
| Blotato | $29 a month, Starter | Monthly, yearly saves about 17% | MCP tools for your agent | Agent builders on Claude or ChatGPT |
| Manychat | $39 a month, Pro | Monthly | Keywords and flow builder | Flow funnels on Instagram and WhatsApp |
| Composio | $0 Hobby, $29 Pro | Monthly | Developer MCP toolkit | Developers wiring their own agent |
| Meta Business Suite | $0 | Free | Templates or Meta Business Agent | Instagram and Facebook templates |
Manychat bills by active contacts. Pro includes 2,500, and each extra contact costs $0.05 on Pro, billed monthly. So a Pro account that passes 2,500 active contacts in a month pays $39 plus $0.05 for every contact over that line, and a viral month raises the bill. Manychat works on Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp and TikTok.
Blotato's MCP has 32 tools, including `blotato_list_conversations` and `blotato_send_message`, so Claude or ChatGPT can list and send DMs. API and MCP access aren't included in its free trial. Composio's Instagram toolkit lists and sends DMs, and its Hobby plan includes 100,000 tool calls a month with no card. Pro is $29 a month, plus $0.0003 per tool call over the allowance.
InstantDM publishes a guide to automating Instagram DMs with Claude. Meta Business Suite costs nothing and sends the template you wrote, or Meta Business Agent.
How BetterSocials handles buyer DMs
BetterSocials puts Instagram, Facebook and TikTok DMs in one inbox and gives AI replies a DMs section with three settings: Off, Draft for me and Reply in my voice. Draft for me writes a draft in the owner's voice the moment a DM arrives, and nothing sends until the owner approves it. Reply in my voice answers a DM about a minute after it arrives.
The voice comes from a profile built from the owner's past replies, plus AI rules the owner writes. Questions wait in Needs reply unless the owner turns on Answer questions too, which only switches on after at least one AI rule exists. When the rules don't cover what a buyer asked, the DM waits for the owner. The AI reads the conversation so far, and after five AI replies in one conversation in a day, the rest wait for a person.
Each new DM is tagged when it arrives, and a Lead tag marks a buyer asking about price, booking or availability. Each AI reply or draft uses 1 AI credit. Creator is $29 a month, or $24 billed yearly, for four accounts and 1,000 AI credits. Pro is $49 a month, or $39 billed yearly, for six accounts. Team is $99 a month, or $79 billed yearly, for twelve accounts and unlimited teammates. Every plan has unlimited contacts and a 7-day free trial with a card.
Claude can run BetterSocials through its hosted connector, including sends. ChatGPT reads the inbox and suggests text in a normal chat.
Frequently asked questions
Can ChatGPT reply to my Instagram DMs automatically?+
Not on its own, because the ChatGPT app doesn't watch your Instagram inbox. With a connector added through Developer mode on a paid plan, a normal ChatGPT chat can read the inbox and suggest reply text. Sending needs a Business, Enterprise or Edu workspace, the inbox tool itself, or Claude.
Can Claude send DM replies for my business?+
Yes, through a custom connector. Claude allows them on Free, which gets one, and on Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise. Connected to an inbox tool such as BetterSocials, Claude can read your DMs and send a reply in your voice when you tell it to.
Do I need the OpenAI or Claude API to automate buyer DMs?+
Only if you build the setup yourself. The Claude Messages API and the OpenAI Responses API write the reply, and you still need a server that receives Meta's webhook and sends through Meta's messaging API. An inbox tool handles that connection and adds approval and rules.
How long do I have to answer an Instagram DM from a tool?+
You have 24 hours from the buyer's last message. After that, Instagram rejects a send from any app until the buyer writes again. You can still answer in the Instagram app, and every new message from the buyer restarts the clock.
Can AI answer a buyer's price question without me?+
Yes, if it has your prices in writing. In BetterSocials, questions wait in Needs reply until you turn on Answer questions too, which needs at least one AI rule such as your prices or booking link. When the rules don't cover the question, the DM waits for you.
What does it cost to have AI draft DM replies?+
BetterSocials Creator is $29 a month, or $24 billed yearly, for four accounts and 1,000 AI credits, and each AI reply or draft uses one credit. Manychat Pro is $39 a month with 2,500 active contacts, plus $0.05 per extra contact, billed monthly. Meta Business Suite's keyword templates are free.
