BetterSocials vs respond.io for Instagram DMs (2026)

November 3, 2026 · 7 min read

For a business whose customers find it on Instagram and Facebook and then ask in a DM, respond.io is more system than the job needs. Pick BetterSocials if you sell where you post and want DMs answered in your voice, from $29 a month for four accounts. Pick Meta Business Suite if a handful of DMs is all you get, since it's free, and pick respond.io for a support team routing WhatsApp and other channels.

BetterSocials and respond.io both answer customer messages, but they're built for different working days. We held both to one job. A customer finds you by searching Instagram or TikTok, then asks about a price or a booking in a DM.

respond.io is built for customer support and sales teams with multiple staff, automated workflows, AI agents and reporting. That's where it earns its price. A business with one or two people answering Instagram and Facebook DMs pays for routing it won't use.

Meta Business Suite sits underneath both, and it costs nothing. BetterSocials adds AI replies in your voice, keyword comment-to-DM and posting to six platforms, with Creator at $29 a month, or $24 a month billed yearly, for four accounts.

The bill for answering DMs, plan by plan

Meta Business Suite is the cheapest option, because it's free. As of October 2026, Meta's help center says "Meta Business Suite is free to use on desktop and in the Meta Business Suite mobile app." So the question for the paid tools is what the extra money buys.

BetterSocials has three plans, and each starts with a 7-day free trial with a card on file.

  • Creator is $29 a month, or $24 a month billed yearly, for four accounts, one login and 1,000 AI credits a month.
  • Pro is $49 a month, or $39 a month billed yearly, for six accounts, one login and 2,000 AI credits a month.
  • Team is $99 a month, or $79 a month billed yearly, for twelve accounts, unlimited teammates and 4,000 shared AI credits a month.

On yearly billing, Creator comes to $24 x 12 = $288 a year. An AI credit is the unit BetterSocials uses to meter AI writing, at one credit per reply. When credits run out, the AI pauses instead of charging more, and contacts, DMs and keyword automations stay unlimited on every plan.

respond.io sets out its plans on its own pricing page. What you pay for there is a support stack of workflows, routing, AI agents and reporting for a team. The wider field of DM tools is priced in 10 Instagram DM tools for small businesses in 2026: our pick, then by price.

What Meta Business Suite does for free, in Meta's words

Meta Business Suite puts messages and comments in one inbox at no charge. In Meta's words, you can "read and reply to new messages and comments from your Facebook Page, Messenger, Instagram account and WhatsApp Business account in one inbox."

It also lets you hand work to staff. Meta says you can "assign conversations in Inbox to different people who help manage your business's communication on Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp," per its help page on assigning conversations.

Its keyword automations send templates you write, or Meta Business Agent. They're set up on desktop and wait 15 minutes before sending unless you reply first. A comment-to-message automation sends a fixed template when a comment on your Instagram or Facebook post holds a keyword you set.

The free automations stop at Meta's own apps, and YouTube, LinkedIn, Threads and email aren't covered. WhatsApp in the inbox is only available in certain regions. Meta lists the European Union and the United Kingdom among the places where it's unavailable.

Three tools, one table

BetterSocials, Meta Business Suite and respond.io split the DM job three ways. The table sets them side by side on the points a small business asks about first.

BetterSocials is stronger when Instagram, Facebook, TikTok and YouTube bring in your customers. respond.io is stronger when WhatsApp or a large support team does.

Who writes the reply: AI in your voice or an AI agent

BetterSocials answers DMs in your own voice, from a voice profile built from your past replies plus AI rules you write. AI rules are plain sentences, such as your prices, your hours or "send people to the booking link", and every draft follows them.

The DMs section of AI replies has three settings: Off, Draft for me and Reply in my voice. Draft for me writes a draft the moment a DM arrives, and nothing sends until you approve it. On Reply in my voice, a DM gets an answer about a minute after it arrives.

Questions wait in Needs reply unless you switch on Answer questions too, which only turns on once you've written at least one AI rule. When your rules don't cover what someone asked, the DM waits for you in Needs reply. After five AI replies in one conversation in a day, the rest wait for you too.

Speed matters because of the clock. Instagram only lets a business reply to a DM within 24 hours of the person's last message. After that, the conversation stays closed until they write again.

respond.io uses AI agents that answer customer conversations automatically, as part of a system built for support and sales teams. BetterSocials also tags every new comment and DM, and a question about price, booking or availability gets a Lead tag and a push to your phone. Lead detection is free and on by default.

The case for respond.io

respond.io is the better pick when your customers message you on WhatsApp, or when a team works chats across many channels. It runs omnichannel conversations, WhatsApp included, from one workspace.

BetterSocials doesn't connect WhatsApp, Telegram, SMS, X or email inboxes. If those bring in your customers, BetterSocials can't be your only inbox.

respond.io also fits a support desk that needs routing, workflows and reporting across many staff, with several people working one queue.

The case for BetterSocials

BetterSocials fits a business that sells where it posts, such as a med spa, salon, gym, realtor, restaurant or venue whose customers ask about prices and bookings. It puts comments from six platforms, and DMs from Instagram, Facebook and TikTok, in one inbox.

Keyword comment-to-DM works with no flow builder. A keyword in an Instagram or Facebook comment sends the person a DM with your link. On TikTok, YouTube, Threads and LinkedIn Company Pages, the keyword posts a public reply with the link instead.

Meta Business Suite has free keyword automations on Instagram and Facebook too. What BetterSocials adds at its price is AI replies in your voice, the other four platforms and posting from the same place.

Pick the plan by account count. Creator covers four accounts for $29 a month, or $24 a month billed yearly. Pro covers six for $49 a month, or $39 a month billed yearly, and Team covers twelve with unlimited teammates for $99 a month, or $79 a month billed yearly.
