The short version runs in three layers. ChatGPT writes anything you paste in. A connector, meaning an app that gives ChatGPT access to another service, lets it read or act on your accounts. Instagram and TikTok then cap what any tool can send, and when.

ChatGPT handles three jobs on a business Instagram, and each one hits a different limit.

Captions

ChatGPT writes captions well from a short brief: what the post shows, who it's for, the one action you want, and your tone. Ask for three versions at different lengths and pick one. Paste in your real prices and links, because ChatGPT fills a gap with a guess.

Comment replies

ChatGPT can draft a reply to any comment you paste in. That works for ten comments. At a hundred, the copying is the job, because a chat window can't see your comments until a tool feeds them in.

DMs

ChatGPT drafts DM replies the same way, and the clock matters more here. Instagram only lets a business reply to a DM through an app within 24 hours of the person's last message. A draft that sits in a chat window overnight can miss that window.

Posting to Instagram and TikTok from ChatGPT

ChatGPT can't post to Instagram or TikTok on its own. It needs a connected app with permission to publish, and OpenAI's rules decide which apps can act inside a normal chat.

There are two routes in. Apps in the ChatGPT app directory are reviewed, and Upload-Post is one of them, so you add it with no Developer mode and no URL to paste. Other tools connect as custom connectors through Developer mode, which needs a paid ChatGPT plan and runs on the web only.

Custom connectors carry a limit that catches people out. OpenAI keeps write actions from custom connectors, such as sending or publishing, for ChatGPT Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces. In a normal chat, the BetterSocials connector offers only its read tools, so ChatGPT can read the inbox and draft replies but can't send a reply or publish a post.

Which tools connect ChatGPT to Instagram, and what each one allows

• Blotato's MCP server covers posting, comment replies on Instagram and Facebook posts, and DMs. Starter is $29 a month on monthly billing, and API and MCP access isn't included in the free trial.
• Zapier MCP publishes Instagram photos and videos for Business accounts, with no comment or DM actions. Each MCP call uses 2 tasks, and Pro starts at $19.99 a month billed annually, or $29.99 billed monthly.

Buffer is cheaper for posting alone. Four channels on Essentials come to 4 x $5 = $20 a month billed yearly, against $24 a month billed yearly for BetterSocials Creator with four accounts. The difference of a few dollars buys comments and DMs in one inbox with replies in your voice.

What to give ChatGPT so the captions and replies sound like you

ChatGPT sounds like you when it has your own words to copy. Start every session with three blocks of context, then ask.

1. 1Your facts: prices, hours, the booking link, and what you don't offer.
2. 2Your voice: ten of your past replies, pasted as written.
3. 3Your limits: reply length, emoji, and whether to quote prices.

Then ask for one thing at a time. For a caption: "Write three Instagram captions for this post from the facts above, at one, three and five lines, each ending with one ask." For a comment: "Reply to this comment in my voice from the facts above, and if the answer isn't there, say I'll reply in DMs." For a DM: "Draft a reply to this message under 60 words that ends with the booking link."

Meta's developer docs on private replies are direct: "Only one message can be sent to the Instagram user who commented. The message must be sent within 7 days from when the comment was created." The 24-hour DM window restarts with every message the person sends, and you can still answer from the Instagram app itself.

TikTok DMs are reply-only and need a Business account. A reply is text up to 6,000 characters or one image, never both. TikTok only lets apps answer DMs for accounts outside the UK and Europe, and a comment can't fire a private DM outside a limited rollout in Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia.
