Free online teleprompters: which ones record, which just scroll

October 1, 2026 · 6 min read

If you only need scrolling text to read from, CuePrompter and Promptr are genuinely free and work in any browser. The catch shows up when you want to record while you read: most "free teleprompter" tools either do not record at all, store nothing on the free plan, or watermark the export. The BetterSocials editor records with a teleprompter in the browser, free with no card, and then edits the take for you, which is the part every other free option leaves you to do somewhere else.

Disclosure

We build BetterSocials. The scroll-only tools below are good and I recommend them for what they do. This page exists because "free teleprompter" usually means "free until you press record," and that is worth knowing before you script your video around one.

Free scroll-only teleprompters (no recording)

CuePrompter

The old reliable. CuePrompter calls itself "100% free for both commercial and non-commercial use" and it is: paste your script, set the speed, and your browser scrolls like an autocue. It does not record. You point your phone or camera at yourself and read off the screen. For a two-camera setup or reading to a webcam you control separately, it still does the job it has done for years.

Promptr

Same idea, nicer to look at. Promptr is donation-supported ("totally free, but if you want to say thanks, consider buying me a beer"), with speed control, text size and mirror mode for beam-splitter rigs. Also no recording.

Teleprompters that record, and where free actually ends

Speakflow

Speakflow's trick is voice-controlled scrolling: the text follows your pace instead of a fixed speed, and it records in the browser. The free plan keeps scripts for 7 days and limits the voice-following. Storing recordings starts on the paid plan at $15 a month billed yearly for one hour of stored video (speakflow.com/pricing, checked August 2026).

VEED's teleprompter

VEED's online teleprompter records your webcam or screen while the script scrolls, which is the right shape. The limit is VEED's free tier itself: their help center says free-account exports carry a VEED watermark and the only way to remove it is a paid subscription (support.veed.io, checked August 2026). Fine for a draft, not for the video you post.

The free option that records and then edits the take

The BetterSocials AI video editor has a teleprompter built into its browser recorder, and the whole thing is free on every account with no card. The difference is what happens after you stop reading:

  • Fumble a line? Pause and say it again. You do not need a second take, because the editor exists to cut the bad one.
  • The silences and long pauses are cut automatically the moment the clip lands.
  • The transcript becomes the editor. Delete the flubbed sentence and that moment leaves the video. Ask your own AI (Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, any MCP agent) to take out the retakes and filler words and caption it.
  • Exports have no watermark, at any length, on any account.

That order matters. A teleprompter helps you record; it does nothing about the hour of editing that follows. Recording and editing in the same free tab is the actual time save. Start editing free.

Which one to use

  • Reading to a real camera on a rig: CuePrompter or Promptr on a tablet. Free, mirror mode, done.
  • Voice-paced scrolling for long scripts: Speakflow, and record on your own device if you do not want to pay for storage.
  • Recording a talking video for Reels, Shorts, YouTube or a course: the BetterSocials editor, because the teleprompter is attached to the tool that removes the pauses and flubs afterward, and the export is clean.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best free online teleprompter?+

For scrolling text only, CuePrompter and Promptr are completely free. For recording while you read, the BetterSocials editor has a teleprompter in its free browser recorder and then cuts the silences and bad takes automatically, with no watermark.

Do free teleprompters record video?+

Most do not. CuePrompter and Promptr only scroll text. Speakflow records but stores recordings on paid plans from $15 a month. VEED records but watermarks free exports. The BetterSocials editor records and edits free.

How do I record myself with a teleprompter for free?+

Open the BetterSocials editor in your browser, paste your script into the teleprompter, and record. If you fumble a line, pause and say it again. The editor cuts silences automatically and you delete the flubbed sentence from the transcript.

Does a teleprompter work with a phone camera?+

Yes. The scroll-only tools like CuePrompter are made for exactly that: run the prompter on one screen and point your phone at yourself. Mirror mode flips the text for beam-splitter teleprompter rigs.
