Hootsuite vs Buffer vs BetterSocials for a small team (2026)

November 2, 2026 · 7 min read

BetterSocials is the best fit for a business whose comments and DMs bring in customers. Creator costs $29 a month, or $24 billed yearly, for four accounts, with comments, DMs and AI replies in one inbox. Hootsuite fits a marketing team that buys a seat per person, at $99 per user a month billed annually. Buffer fits someone who mostly schedules posts and answers a few comments by hand.

Hootsuite, Buffer and BetterSocials side by side

BetterSocials, Hootsuite and Buffer all post to your accounts and collect comments, so we built this as a three-way, with Buffer as the third column. Hootsuite charges per person. Buffer charges per channel, and BetterSocials charges per plan by account count.

Prices in the table are from each vendor's pricing page as of October 2026. Buffer's inbox details are as of August 2026, and Hootsuite's inbox networks as of July 2026.

Buffer is cheaper per channel. Four channels on Buffer Essentials cost 4 x $5 = $20 a month billed yearly, against BetterSocials Creator at $24 billed yearly for four accounts. What the difference buys is the DM side of the inbox, AI replies in your voice and keyword comment-to-DM.

What one person pays on each tool

Hootsuite Standard costs $99 per user a month, billed annually, as of October 2026. Professional is $199 and Advanced is $399 on the same terms. Hootsuite's plans page says monthly billing exists, and it shows no monthly price.

One person on Hootsuite Standard pays twelve months of $99, well over a thousand dollars a year. BetterSocials Creator is $29 a month, or $24 a month billed yearly ($288 a year), for four social accounts and one login. That's about nine hundred dollars a year less than one Hootsuite seat.

Buffer Essentials is $5 a channel a month billed yearly, or $6 billed monthly, for one user, as of October 2026. Six channels on Buffer cost $30 a month billed yearly, against $39 for BetterSocials Pro, which covers six accounts for $49 a month or $39 billed yearly. You can check both rates on Hootsuite's plans page and Buffer's pricing page.

Every BetterSocials plan starts with a 7-day free trial, card required. The first paid charge has a 30-day money-back guarantee.

How the bill moves when a second and third person log in

Hootsuite's plans page tells buyers to "Purchase as many user seats as your team needs." Each seat on Standard is $99 a month, billed annually. Three people pay for three seats, close to three hundred dollars a month, and five people pay close to five hundred.

BetterSocials Creator and Pro are one login each. Team is $99 a month, or $79 billed yearly, for 12 accounts and unlimited teammates, who you invite by email from Settings, then Team. Three people or ten pay the same $79 on yearly billing, sharing 4,000 AI credits a month.

Buffer Team is $10 a channel a month billed yearly, or $12 monthly, with unlimited team members, as of October 2026. Twelve channels on Buffer Team at $10 each come to more than a hundred dollars a month billed yearly. BetterSocials Team covers the same twelve accounts for $79.

Which comments and DMs reach each inbox

BetterSocials puts Instagram and Facebook comments and DMs, TikTok comments and DMs, YouTube comments, Threads comments and LinkedIn Company Page comments in one inbox. YouTube has no DM API for any tool, so YouTube is comments only. TikTok DMs are reply-only, with up to 10 replies in the 48 hours after the person writes.

Hootsuite's inbox starts on Standard, where the plans page lists "Respond to messages from one inbox." Hootsuite reads TikTok comments. Its inbox doesn't include YouTube comments, as of July 2026.

Buffer's Community inbox covers comments on every plan and reads YouTube comments, as of August 2026. It has no DMs, so Instagram and Facebook messages stay in the phone app.

BetterSocials has gaps of its own. It doesn't connect X, Gmail or Outlook, WhatsApp, Telegram or SMS. A LinkedIn personal profile is posting and analytics only, because LinkedIn doesn't let any app read a personal profile's comments or messages.

Turning a comment keyword into a DM, and what ManyChat charges for it

BetterSocials sends a DM with your link when someone comments a keyword on Instagram or Facebook. There's no flow builder, and keywords are unlimited on every plan. On TikTok and YouTube no tool can turn a comment into a private DM, so there, and on Threads and LinkedIn Company Pages, the keyword posts a public reply with the link.

ManyChat is the dedicated tool for this job, and it bills by contact. ManyChat Pro is $39 a month with 2,500 active contacts, and each extra contact costs $0.05, billed monthly, as of October 2026. An account that reaches 4,000 people in a month pays the $39 plus $0.05 for every contact past 2,500, which comes to more than a hundred dollars.

Meta Business Suite also has a free comment-to-message automation for Instagram and Facebook, as of July 2026. It sends a fixed template you write, it's set up on desktop, and it can wait 15 minutes before sending. BetterSocials bills nothing per contact, so a busy week costs the same as a quiet one.

Who writes the replies: inbox automation or AI in your voice

Hootsuite's Professional plan adds "Automate inbox replies and workflows" at $199 per user a month, billed annually. Standard at $99 has the inbox, and the automation starts one tier up.

BetterSocials has AI replies on every plan, with separate Comments and DMs sections. Each has three settings: Off, Draft for me and Reply in my voice. Draft for me writes a reply in your voice the moment a comment or DM arrives, and nothing posts until you approve it.

On Reply in my voice, everyday comments get an answer 1 to 5 minutes later, and a DM gets one about a minute after it arrives. Questions wait in Needs reply unless you turn on Answer questions too, which needs at least one AI rule with your prices, hours or booking link. Each AI reply uses one credit, and Creator includes 1,000 a month.

When Hootsuite's seat price is worth paying

Hootsuite earns its $99 seat when a marketing team wants a login per person and a plan priced by headcount. Professional adds automated inbox replies and workflows at $199 per user, and Advanced is $399, both billed annually. Enterprise is custom, priced through Hootsuite's sales team.

If your company already budgets software per employee, Hootsuite's model fits that budget. The bill grows with each person you add.

When BetterSocials or Buffer is the better buy

BetterSocials is the better buy when one person or a small team runs the accounts and comments and DMs bring in customers. Creator is $29 a month, or $24 billed yearly, for four accounts. Team is $99 a month, or $79 billed yearly, for twelve accounts and unlimited teammates.

You get YouTube comments, Instagram and Facebook DMs, keyword comment-to-DM and AI replies in one inbox. The price stays the same however many people comment.

Buffer is the better buy if you mostly schedule posts and answer a few comments by hand. At $5 a channel billed yearly, it costs less than BetterSocials at matching account counts. BetterSocials' 7-day free trial starts from its pricing page.
