How to answer TikTok DMs inside the 48-hour window
November 3, 2026 · 8 min read
A TikTok business account can only answer DMs. It can never send the first message. Through a reply tool, you get 48 hours after the person writes and up to 10 replies, each one text or one image. For a small business that wants TikTok DMs in one inbox with Instagram and Facebook, BetterSocials is our pick. Manychat suits teams that build automated flows, and TikTok Business Center suits teammates replying by hand.
The rules in one place: reply-only, 48 hours, 10 messages
TikTok's Business Messaging API sets every limit in this piece. That's the official door that third-party tools use to read and send DMs for a business account. We took the operator's angle: the rules first, then a reply desk you can set up this week, with the steps written out.
These are the three rules your process has to respect, from TikTok's developer docs and BetterSocials' own TikTok limits, as of October 2026:
- A business can't start a conversation. TikTok says you're "prohibited from initiating a conversation or messaging any TikTok user who has not started a conversation with you."
- After a person's first message, the account "can send up to 10 messages within the next 48 hours."
- In BetterSocials, each reply is text up to 6,000 characters or one image, never both in the same message.
Everything else (who can use a tool, which countries, what a comment can do) follows from those three.
TikTok's DM limits for business accounts, quoted
TikTok publishes the limits on its messaging limits page for the Business Messaging API. The wording matters, so here it is as written.
After the first message, "TikTok account can send up to 10 messages within the next 48 hours." Then: "Within 48 hours after each last reply from the TikTok user, the TikTok account can send an unlimited number of messages." And once the clock runs out: "If more than 48 hours have passed," the account is "limited to sending a maximum of three additional messages."
TikTok scopes these limits to "non-mutual follow conversations," meaning chats where you and the person don't follow each other. BetterSocials holds TikTok DM replies to at most 10 within 48 hours of the person's last message, so a tool's own cap can sit inside TikTok's.
Two more rules shape who can use any of this. TikTok says the API "only supports TikTok Accounts with Advanced Access or Verified Business Accounts... Personal Accounts are not eligible." It also says the API "is not yet available in the European Economic Area, Switzerland or the UK market."
Working the 48-hour window: what resets the clock
TikTok resets the window every time the person writes back. A conversation where they keep replying stays open. The window only closes on a buyer who went quiet.
That makes response time the number to manage. Treat a TikTok DM like an inbound lead with a 48-hour expiry, because that's what it is. Set your team's target well inside it, so a weekend doesn't eat the window.
Three habits keep a reply desk inside the limits:
- 1Answer the question in the first reply. If someone asks about a price or a booking, give the answer and the link in one message, because every message counts toward the 10.
- 2Send an image only when it answers the question. An image is a whole reply on its own, so a menu photo plus a booking link costs two of your 10.
- 3Close the loop with a question back. When the person answers, TikTok reopens a fresh 48-hour window.
Miss the window and the conversation waits until they write to you again. Answer inside it and the buyer hears back while they still want to book.
Answering TikTok DMs from a desk: your four options
TikTok Business Center is the starting point for any desktop setup, because it's where team access lives. TikTok says that "after integrating your Business Account with Business Center, you can grant users permissions to manage direct messages." In Business Center, go to the Assets module, open the TikTok accounts page and click Assign new member.
The table below sorts the four ways we'd answer TikTok DMs from a desk by the job each does best.
| Option | Replies written by | Best for | Limit to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| BetterSocials | AI drafts in your voice | TikTok, Instagram, Facebook DMs together | 10 replies per 48 hours |
| Manychat | Automations you build | WhatsApp and TikTok in one tool | Billed per active contact |
| TikTok auto-messages | Canned text TikTok approves | The same few questions | 500-character keyword replies |
| Business Center access | Teammates typing by hand | Several people on one account | Needs a Business Center link |
BetterSocials puts TikTok DMs next to Instagram and Facebook DMs, with replies drafted in the owner's voice. Creator is $29 a month, or $24 a month billed yearly, for four social accounts and one login, with unlimited contacts.
Manychat works on Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp and TikTok. Pro is $39 a month with 2,500 active contacts, billed monthly, as of October 2026, and each extra contact costs $0.05 on Pro. So a Pro account that passes 2,500 contacts in a month pays the $39 plus $0.05 for every person over the line. Pick Manychat if you also need WhatsApp in the same tool.
TikTok's own auto-messages cover welcome messages, keyword replies, suggested questions and chat prompts. Keywords max out at 40 characters and replies at 500. Every message goes through approval "within 1-5 business days," and any edit sends it back for review.
Account types and countries that can use a DM tool
TikTok lets a reply tool answer DMs only for a Business account with Advanced Access or a Verified Business Account. TikTok says plainly that "Personal Accounts are not eligible." A Verified Business Account is a business account that TikTok has verified.
TikTok spells out how to get Advanced Access. TikTok's account entitlements article says to "link your TikTok account to a TikTok for Business account or an unverified Business Center." Some features stay with verified accounts only, including "Messaging auto-lead collection" and "AI chatbot."
Country rules come next. TikTok's Business Messaging API access page says the API "is not yet available in the European Economic Area, Switzerland or the UK market." An account based there still answers DMs in the TikTok app. In BetterSocials, AI replies to TikTok DMs only run for accounts outside the UK and Europe.
Why a TikTok comment can't open a DM
TikTok doesn't let a comment fire a private DM through BetterSocials or any other tool. The one exception is a limited rollout in Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia. None of TikTok's in-app or Help Center pages lists a comment-triggered DM.
That changes how you run a keyword campaign. On Instagram and Facebook, a keyword in a comment can send the person a DM with your link. On TikTok, the keyword posts a public reply under the comment, and the link goes there.
The DM conversation starts when the commenter writes to you. From that first message, the 48-hour window and the 10-message limit apply. So put the next step in the public reply, and tell people to message you for the rest.
Setting up BetterSocials for TikTok DMs this week
BetterSocials answers TikTok DMs inside the limits above, from one inbox. Its setup guide puts the first pass at about ten minutes, and these are the steps an operator runs.
- 1Check the TikTok account. It has to be a Business account with Advanced Access, so link it to a TikTok for Business account or a Business Center first.
- 2Connect TikTok. In BetterSocials, open Connected Accounts in the sidebar, pick TikTok and sign in on TikTok's own screen. It takes under a minute, and your password never touches BetterSocials.
- 3Write your AI rules. These are plain sentences such as your prices, your hours and your booking link. Every draft and automatic reply follows them.
- 4Pick a DM setting. Go to Settings, then AI voice, and find the DMs section. Draft for me writes a reply in your voice the moment a DM arrives, and nothing sends until you approve it.
- 5Decide on automatic answers. Reply in my voice answers a DM about a minute after it arrives. Questions still wait in Needs reply unless you turn on Answer questions too, which only switches on once you've written at least one AI rule.
When your AI rules don't cover what someone asked, the DM waits for you in Needs reply. After five AI replies in one conversation in a day, the rest wait for you too. Each AI reply uses one AI credit, and Creator includes 1,000 a month.
Pro is $49 a month, or $39 billed yearly, for six accounts. Team is $99 a month, or $79 billed yearly, for twelve accounts and unlimited teammates. Every plan starts with a 7-day free trial, card required.
Frequently asked questions
Can a TikTok business account message someone first?+
No. TikTok's Business Messaging API says businesses are "prohibited from initiating a conversation or messaging any TikTok user who has not started a conversation with you." Every tool that uses the API, BetterSocials included, can only reply.
How many DM replies can a TikTok business account send?+
Through a third-party tool, up to 10 messages within 48 hours of the person's first message. Each time they reply, a new 48-hour window opens. After 48 hours of silence, TikTok allows "a maximum of three additional messages."
Can I send photos in a TikTok DM reply from a tool?+
Yes, one image per reply. In BetterSocials, a TikTok DM reply is text up to 6,000 characters or one image, never both. A picture plus a link takes two replies, and both count toward your 10.
Why can't I reply to TikTok DMs from a tool in the UK or Europe?+
TikTok says its Business Messaging API "is not yet available in the European Economic Area, Switzerland or the UK market." Accounts based there can still answer DMs in the TikTok app. Comments, keyword replies and posting still work through BetterSocials.
Do I need a Verified Business Account to reply to TikTok DMs?+
You need a Business account with Advanced Access or a Verified Business Account. TikTok says "Personal Accounts are not eligible." Linking the account to a TikTok for Business account or an unverified Business Center gets you Advanced Access.
Can a TikTok comment trigger an automatic DM?+
Not through any tool outside TikTok's limited rollout in Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia. In BetterSocials, a keyword in a TikTok comment posts a public reply with your link instead. When the commenter writes to you, the DM lands in the inbox and your 48-hour window starts.
