Own OpenAI key or AI included: what AI replies cost in 2026
November 3, 2026 · 8 min read
Most paid AI reply tools don't need your own OpenAI API key, because the AI cost sits inside the plan. BetterSocials is best for one flat bill that covers AI replies to comments and DMs on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok and YouTube, with Creator at $29 a month, or $24 billed yearly, for four accounts and 1,000 AI credits. An n8n workflow is best for builders who want full control, and it runs on your own OpenAI key, so OpenAI bills you for every reply. Instagram's own AI auto replies run inside the Instagram app, but Instagram is still introducing them gradually.
The cost question: three ways to pay for AI replies
BetterSocials, n8n and Instagram's built-in AI auto replies stand for the three ways you can pay for AI that answers comments and DMs. We took the cost question for this memo, because the key question comes down to who sends you the bill.
An OpenAI API key is a code that lets software call OpenAI's models and bills the key's owner for each call. If a tool asks you to paste one during setup, every reply it writes lands on your OpenAI account.
The three routes look like this:
- 1The AI is inside a subscription. You pay the tool, and a monthly allowance (often called AI credits) caps how much it writes.
- 2The AI runs on your own key. You pay for the workflow tool and pay OpenAI separately for usage.
- 3The AI runs inside the platform's own app. You set it up in the app and take what Meta ships.
Our assumptions: one business with four to six social accounts, answering a few dozen comments and DMs a day. If a pricing page counts AI credits or AI replies per month, the AI is in the price. If setup asks for an OpenAI key, it isn't.
Five ways to pay for AI replies, side by side
BetterSocials leads the table because this memo is about who pays for the AI, and its plans state the AI allowance as a credit count. Prices below are from each vendor's own pages as of September 2026, and ManyChat's as of October 2026.
| Route | AI paid by | Entry price | Bill moves with |
|---|---|---|---|
| BetterSocials Creator | The plan, 1,000 credits a month | $29 a month, four accounts | Nothing, AI pauses at zero |
| ManyChat Pro | An add-on on top | $39 a month, 2,500 contacts | Contacts past 2,500, plus AI |
| Self-built n8n workflow | Your own OpenAI key | OpenAI usage plus workflow hosting | Every reply the workflow sends |
| Instagram AI auto replies | The Instagram app itself | Not listed | Not listed |
| CreatorFlow Pro | No AI, template replies | $15 a month, two accounts | Not listed |
ManyChat is best for teams that already build flows across Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp and TikTok. Its AI costs extra on top of the plan. A self-built n8n workflow that answers Instagram comments with OpenAI is best for teams with someone who maintains it.
Instagram's AI auto replies are best for a creator who stays on Instagram and works from the phone. Per Instagram's help page, you need a professional account and a creator AI built in Meta AI Studio first. CreatorFlow is best for low-cost Instagram-only keyword DMs, where templates are enough.
Two more names come up often. InstantDM has a free tier of 500 credits a month and sells AI agents powered by ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini on Instagram and Facebook. Inrō's product page describes an Instagram AI agent that answers your DMs in your voice.
The worked sums at four to six accounts
BetterSocials Creator costs $29 a month, or $24 billed yearly, for four accounts and 1,000 AI credits. Each AI reply or draft uses one credit. Used in full, that's 2.9 cents a reply on monthly billing, or about 33 AI replies a day over 30 days.
Pro is $49 a month, or $39 billed yearly, for six accounts and 2,000 credits. That's about 2.5 cents a reply on monthly billing, or about 66 a day. Team is $99 a month, or $79 billed yearly, for twelve accounts and 4,000 credits shared by every teammate.
On price alone, several Instagram tools come in under BetterSocials. ReplyRush's paid plans start with Lite at $10, and CreatorFlow Pro is $15 a month, or $12 billed yearly. LinkDM has a free tier with 1,000 DMs a month. All three sit on Instagram and Facebook, or Instagram alone, and CreatorFlow and LinkDM send template replies with no AI replies.
ManyChat is the one whose bill grows with your audience. A ManyChat Pro account that reaches 4,000 people in a month pays $39 plus 1,500 extra contacts at $0.05 each, a little over a hundred dollars, before any AI add-on. The same 4,000 people on BetterSocials Creator cost $29 a month for four accounts, because contacts are unlimited on every plan.
What the extra money over the cheapest tools buys is AI replies in your voice, with comments and DMs from several platforms in one inbox.
How OpenAI bills a key, and why ChatGPT Plus doesn't cover it
OpenAI bills ChatGPT plans and API use separately. A ChatGPT Plus plan doesn't pay for API calls a reply tool makes on your key. So any build that runs on your own key brings a second bill, and that bill changes with every reply.
BetterSocials takes a different route for people who want their own assistant in the loop. Claude and ChatGPT connect with your normal BetterSocials login through OAuth, a sign-in handoff that needs no key.
Claude runs every tool, from reading the inbox to sending replies and scheduling posts. ChatGPT connects through Developer mode on a paid plan, on the web only. In a normal ChatGPT chat it can read the inbox and draft, but it can't send a reply or publish a post.
What a credit buys, and what happens at zero
BetterSocials spends one AI credit on each AI reply or draft, on a comment or a DM, and it skips spam. Credits meter AI writing only. Contacts, DMs, comments and keyword automations are unlimited on every plan.
When the credits run out, the AI pauses. It never charges more on its own. Your inbox keeps working, so you can still reply by hand, and keyword messages you wrote yourself still send.
Two limits keep the AI from running away with a conversation. After five AI replies in one conversation in a day, the rest wait for you. Anything your AI rules don't cover, such as a price or an order detail, waits in Needs reply instead of getting a guess.
What we would do
BetterSocials or an n8n build on your own key comes down to who maintains it and who can live with a bill that moves. We'd build on n8n only if you have someone who already maintains workflows and wants to choose the model and the prompt.
For a founder or marketer running social alongside everything else, we'd pay one price with the AI inside it. You know the bill before the month starts, and a busy month costs the same as a quiet one. Our memo on what a chatbot, a scheduler and an AI manager cost a small business in 2026 runs the same sums across tool types.
If Instagram is your only platform and templates cover most questions, start with CreatorFlow or Instagram's own AI auto replies and move up when the questions outgrow them.
Inside BetterSocials' AI settings
BetterSocials keeps its AI replies under Settings, then AI voice, and the same switch sits in the Inbox header. AI replies have two sections, Comments and DMs, and each has three settings: Off, Draft for me and Reply in my voice.
Draft for me writes a draft in your voice the moment a comment or DM arrives, and nothing posts until you approve it. Reply in my voice answers everyday comments 1 to 5 minutes later and answers a DM about a minute after it arrives. On Off, AI assist writes a draft on any Inbox thread when you click it.
The voice comes from your past replies plus AI rules, which are plain sentences you write, such as your hours or your booking link. Questions wait in Needs reply unless you turn on Answer questions too, and that switch only turns on once you've written at least one AI rule.
Every plan has a 7-day free trial (card required) and a 30-day money-back guarantee on the first paid charge. You can start the trial from BetterSocials' pricing page. Our list of the best AI social media managers in 2026 for owners who run social alone puts it next to the alternatives.
Frequently asked questions
Do Instagram AI reply tools need my own OpenAI API key?+
It depends on how the tool runs its AI. Subscription tools such as BetterSocials run it inside the plan, so there's no key to add. DIY setups, such as an n8n workflow that answers comments with OpenAI, run on your own OpenAI API key, and OpenAI bills you for the replies.
Is the AI included in the BetterSocials price?+
Yes. Every BetterSocials plan includes AI replies in your voice, with no OpenAI key to add. Creator is $29 a month, or $24 billed yearly, for four accounts and 1,000 AI credits. Pro is $49 a month for six accounts and 2,000 credits, and Team is $99 a month for twelve accounts and 4,000 shared credits.
Is OpenAI API billing separate from a ChatGPT subscription?+
Yes. OpenAI bills ChatGPT plans and API use separately, so a ChatGPT Plus plan doesn't pay for API calls a reply tool makes on your key. Connecting ChatGPT to BetterSocials uses your login instead, through Developer mode on a paid plan.
What happens when I run out of AI credits in BetterSocials?+
BetterSocials pauses the AI and never charges more on its own. Your inbox keeps working, so you can still reply by hand, and keyword messages you wrote yourself still send. Comments and DMs your AI rules don't cover were already waiting for you in Needs reply.
How many AI replies do BetterSocials credits cover?+
Each BetterSocials AI reply or draft, on a comment or a DM, uses 1 credit, and spam is skipped. Creator's 1,000 credits a month cover about 33 AI replies a day over 30 days. Pro's 2,000 cover about 66 a day, and Team shares 4,000 across every teammate.
Can I connect my own ChatGPT or Claude to BetterSocials without an API key?+
Yes. Claude and ChatGPT connect with your normal BetterSocials login, no API key. Claude runs every tool, including sending replies and scheduling posts. ChatGPT connects through Developer mode on a paid plan, on the web, and in a normal chat it can read the inbox and draft but can't send.
