TikTok auto messages in 2026: the rules, the limits and the comments they miss

October 29, 2026 · 9 min read

TikTok's built-in auto messages answer DMs, not comments, and TikTok reviews each one for 1 to 5 business days before it runs. TikTok Message center is best for people who message you first, inside TikTok's own Business suite, and ManyChat is best for DM flows that also run on Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp. BetterSocials is best when people ask in the comments, because it posts a public reply with your link under each keyword comment, from $29 a month, or $24 billed yearly, for four accounts.

Only a Verified Business Account with Advanced Access gets the four auto messages. Outside TikTok's limited rollout in Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia, no tool can turn a TikTok comment into a private DM. So the public reply under the comment is where your link goes.

What do TikTok's auto messages do, and who can switch them on?

TikTok's auto messages are replies TikTok sends for you inside direct messages. You write them once, and the person who writes to you sets them off. We're taking the rules explainer here: the limits, the windows and the counts, as TikTok's own help pages state them.

TikTok lists four types:

  • A welcome message, up to 250 characters.
  • Keyword reply, which TikTok says fires "when a person uses an exact match of your chosen keywords in their message."
  • Suggested questions, each question up to 80 characters and each answer up to 200.
  • Chat prompts.

TikTok's overview page, last updated in May 2026, says auto messages are "only available to TikTok Account with Advanced Access and Verified Business Account (VBA)." It adds that "they are not available to General TikTok Accounts."

In the app, tap Business suite, then Message center, and toggle on Welcome message, Keyword reply, Suggested questions and Chat prompts. TikTok's setup guide for auto messages walks through the same path. Setting them up on the web goes through Business Center, and that also needs a Verified Business Account.

Every message goes through TikTok's review before it runs. You get an in-app notification on the status within 1 to 5 business days. Any edit to the message sends it back through the same review.

TikTok comments can get an automatic reply with your link, but TikTok's auto messages won't be what sends it. Keyword reply fires on a keyword in a message, so a viewer who comments your keyword under a video isn't reached by it.

The route that works is a tool built on TikTok's comment API. An API, here, is the set of endpoints TikTok opens to outside apps for comments on your own videos. TikTok's comment API documentation lists endpoints to create, reply to, like, hide, delete and list comments.

The same documentation describes a webhook, a notice TikTok sends to the app, that arrives "within five minutes of a comment or reply being created." A keyword automation on the comment API watches for your word and posts a public reply under the comment, with your link in it. The person gets the answer in the place they asked.

One workaround is asking viewers to DM you the keyword instead of commenting it. That works, and TikTok's own keyword reply handles it on a Verified Business Account. People who comment anyway still need an answer, and a public reply with your link gives them one.

In stack terms, TikTok Message center covers the DM step. A comment tool covers the step above it, where viewers ask in public.

Where does ManyChat fit on TikTok, and what does it cost?

ManyChat works on TikTok, alongside Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp. ManyChat's guide to its first TikTok automation builds it on the trigger "User sends a message." So ManyChat's TikTok setup starts in the DMs, the same place TikTok's built-in tool works.

The TikTok rule applies to ManyChat like every other tool. A TikTok comment can't trigger a private DM outside the rollout in Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia. On TikTok, the link for a commenter goes in the public reply.

ManyChat's price is metered by active contacts. Pro is $39 a month, billed monthly, with 2,500 active contacts, as of October 2026. Each extra contact costs $0.05 on Pro, $0.10 on Essential and $0.025 on Business.

So a Pro account pays $39 a month plus $0.05 for every contact past 2,500. A month with more contacts moves the bill with it.

Several tools read TikTok comments. Later, Pallyy, Vista Social, Sprout Social and Hootsuite all do, and so does BetterSocials. Later's Conversations inbox starts on its Growth plan at $37.50 a month billed yearly, as of October 2026.

Pallyy's inbox starts on Pro at $25 a month, or $20 billed yearly, as of October 2026. That's cheaper than BetterSocials Creator at $29 a month, or $24 billed yearly, for four accounts. Hootsuite includes its inbox from Standard at $99 per user a month, and Sprout Social puts its inbox on Standard at $199 per seat a month, both billed annually, as of October 2026.

How tight are the limits on TikTok's keyword reply?

TikTok's keyword reply runs inside fixed limits, and every one of them comes from TikTok's setup guide and overview page. The table lists each rule as TikTok's help pages give it.

RuleLimit
KeywordUp to 40 characters
Keyword replyUp to 500 characters
Welcome messageUp to 250 characters
Suggested questionUp to 80 characters
Suggested answerUp to 200 characters
MatchExact match in a message
AccountVerified Business Account, Advanced Access
ReviewOne to five business days per edit

Exact match means the person's message has to contain your keyword as you set it.

The review is the limit you feel most. A link that changes for a sale or a new booking page goes back into review, and it can sit unapproved for most of a week.

TikTok's free tool is enough when most people DM you first, your link rarely changes and your account is already verified. It falls short when your captions ask people to comment, because the trigger lives in the DMs.

Can a TikTok comment start a DM through TikTok's API?

TikTok doesn't let any tool turn a comment into a private DM, outside the limited rollout in Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia. TikTok never lets a tool start a DM at all. A tool can only reply once someone has written to your Business account.

What the comment API allows is public. A tool can list your comments, reply under them, like them, hide them and delete them.

The DM rules are tighter. Once someone writes in, a tool can send up to 10 replies within 48 hours of their last message. Each reply is text up to 6,000 characters or one image, never both.

TikTok only lets apps answer DMs for accounts outside the UK and Europe.

For a funnel, this means the DM step opens only when the viewer chooses to message you. The comment reply is the step you control, so your link belongs there.

Which TikTok comment and DM tools fit which job in 2026?

BetterSocials, TikTok Message center and ManyChat each cover a different part of a TikTok conversation. Prices below are list prices as of October 2026, and ManyChat's row follows its first TikTok setup guide.

ToolStarts fromAnswers inBest forPrice
BetterSocialsA keyword comment or a DMThe comment or the DMComments asking for the link$29 a month, four accounts
TikTok Message centerA message to your accountThe DM threadPeople who message firstBuilt into Business suite
ManyChatA user's messageThe DM threadFlows across several apps$39 a month, 2,500 contacts

Pick TikTok Message center if most buyers DM you first and your link stays put. It's built into TikTok's Business suite, and its review time is the main trade.

Pick ManyChat if your DM flows already run on Instagram, Messenger or WhatsApp and you want TikTok DMs in the same place. Watch the active contact count, because that's what sets the bill.

Pick BetterSocials if your comments ask for the link, the price or the booking page. It posts the keyword reply with your link under each matching comment and puts TikTok DMs in one inbox with Instagram, Facebook and YouTube.

What BetterSocials adds on TikTok comments and DMs

BetterSocials puts TikTok comments and DMs in one Inbox with Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, Threads and LinkedIn Company Pages. On TikTok, a keyword automation posts a public reply with your link under every matching comment. There's no flow builder, and keyword automations are unlimited on every plan.

For DMs, AI replies sit in Settings, then AI voice, with three settings: Off, Draft for me and Reply in my voice. On Reply in my voice, a DM gets an answer about a minute after it arrives, written in your voice from your past replies. That answer lands inside TikTok's 48-hour window.

When your AI rules don't cover what someone asked, the DM waits for you in Needs reply. After five AI replies in one conversation in a day, the rest wait for you too. Each AI reply uses one AI credit, and the cost of AI replies across tools is covered in AI reply suggestions in a social media scheduler: what they cost in 2026.

Creator is $29 a month, or $24 a month billed yearly, for four accounts, one login and 1,000 AI credits a month. Pro is $49 a month, or $39 billed yearly, for six accounts. Team is $99 a month, or $79 billed yearly, for twelve accounts and unlimited teammates.

Every plan has unlimited contacts and a 7-day free trial, card required. Our suggestion is to keep TikTok's free keyword reply on for DMs and test BetterSocials on the comments during that trial.

Frequently asked questions

Does ManyChat officially support TikTok comment automation in 2026?+

ManyChat works on TikTok, and its help center sets up the first TikTok automation as "User sends a message", so it starts in the DMs. A TikTok comment can't trigger a private DM on any tool outside TikTok's limited rollout in Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia. A public reply carrying your link is the route that works.

Does TikTok have an official feature to auto-reply to comments with a link?+

TikTok's own auto messages are built for DMs. Keyword reply fires when a person uses an exact match of your keyword in their message. For comments, tools on TikTok's comment API post a public reply, so the reply under the comment is where the link goes.

Can any tool send a DM when someone comments on TikTok?+

No, outside TikTok's limited rollout in Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia. TikTok never lets a tool start a DM. Once someone writes to your Business account, a tool can send up to 10 replies within 48 hours of their last message, each one text up to 6,000 characters or one image.

Which TikTok accounts can use auto messages?+

TikTok says auto messages are only available to TikTok accounts with Advanced Access and a Verified Business Account. General TikTok accounts don't get them. Setting them up on the web through Business Center also needs a Verified Business Account, and in the app the switches sit in Business suite, then Message center.

How long does TikTok take to approve an auto message?+

TikTok reviews every auto message and sends an in-app notification within 1 to 5 business days. Any edit to the message sends it back through the same review. So a link that changes for a sale or a new booking page can sit unapproved for most of a week.

How much does BetterSocials cost for TikTok comments and DMs?+

Creator is $29 a month, or $24 a month billed yearly, for four social accounts and one login. Pro is $49 a month, or $39 billed yearly, for six accounts. Team is $99 a month, or $79 billed yearly, for twelve accounts. Every plan has unlimited contacts and keyword automations and a 7-day free trial with a card.
