Can Claude or ChatGPT run your social inbox in 2026?
October 30, 2026 · 9 min read
Yes, ChatGPT and Claude can reply to your comments and DMs and post for you, but only through a connector. What each one may send depends on its plan and on the platform. For replies and posting in one place, we'd start with BetterSocials, Blotato is best for posting from Claude, and Upload-Post is best for ChatGPT users who want an app from the directory.
The connector is an MCP server. MCP, the Model Context Protocol, is the open standard that lets an AI assistant operate other software.
The rules memo: what an AI can and can't touch
ChatGPT and Claude can't see your Instagram, TikTok or YouTube accounts on their own. They act through a tool that holds your accounts, and three sets of rules stack on top of each other. This memo takes those rules one at a time, because they decide what you can hand over.
The AI's plan decides whether it may send or only read. The tool's connector decides which actions exist at all. The platform decides when a reply is allowed.
We assume you run the accounts yourself or with a small team, and you want a person to approve anything a buyer will read. Where a rule changes what we'd recommend, we say so.
Connecting ChatGPT or Claude to comments and DMs: who can press send
Claude allows custom connectors on Free, which allows one, and on Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise, per Anthropic's support article 11175166. On Team and Enterprise, an Owner adds them for everyone. With BetterSocials, Claude runs every tool, sending included.
ChatGPT connects a custom MCP server through Developer mode, which needs a paid plan and runs on the web only. OpenAI reserves write actions from custom connectors for ChatGPT Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces. On any other plan, a custom connector reads and drafts, and you do the sending.
That splits the job cleanly. Claude reads the Inbox, drafts and sends replies in your voice, and creates, captions and schedules posts. In a normal ChatGPT chat, the same connector offers the read tools only, so ChatGPT reads the Inbox and drafts a reply for you to send.
Either way, a send or post from an assistant only happens on your instruction. BetterSocials runs it through the same limits as its own app.
Which social media MCP servers work with Claude, and what each covers
BetterSocials, Blotato, Upload-Post, Ayrshare and Metricool all host MCP servers, and they differ more on comments and DMs than on posting. The table sorts them by the job this memo is about, answering people. Prices are each vendor's monthly list price as of October 2026.
| Server | Posting | Comments | DMs | Entry price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BetterSocials | Six platforms | Six platforms | Instagram, Facebook, TikTok | $29 a month, four accounts |
| Blotato | Nine platforms | Instagram and Facebook posts | Read and send | $29 a month, Starter |
| Upload-Post | Ten platforms | Read and reply | Read and send | Free for 10 uploads |
| Ayrshare | 14 or more networks | Read and reply | Business, or $49 add-on | $149 a month, Premium |
| Metricool | Scheduled posts | Not in the MCP yet | Not in the MCP yet | Free plan, one brand |
BetterSocials reads comments from Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, Threads, TikTok and LinkedIn Company Pages, and answers DMs on Instagram, Facebook and TikTok. Creator is $29 a month, or $24 billed yearly, for four accounts. Blotato's API and MCP access isn't included in its free trial, and generating an API key during the trial ends it and starts billing.
Upload-Post is cheaper to start than BetterSocials: Basic is $24 a month, or $16 billed yearly. Ayrshare signs in with a static API key only, so claude.ai, Claude Desktop and Claude mobile personal connectors aren't supported. It fits Claude Code and Cursor.
Metricool's MCP works on any plan, Free included, which covers one brand and up to 20 scheduled posts a month. Its limits page says inbox messages and post comments "are not available through the MCP at the moment". Starter is $25 a month, or $20 billed yearly.
If you'd rather host your own, GitHub has options. Postiz is an open-source scheduler with MCP built in and 37,288 stars on October 16, 2026, though it has no inbox. HagaiHen's facebook-mcp-server reads and replies to Facebook Page comments and sends DMs with a Page access token.
Whether ChatGPT can publish to Instagram and TikTok
ChatGPT can't post to Instagram or TikTok on its own. It publishes through a connected tool, and the route you take decides whether it can press publish.
Upload-Post is a reviewed app in the ChatGPT app directory, a route that needs "No Developer mode and no URL to paste". Upload-Post's docs put manual setup on Developer mode for Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise or Edu. OpenAI keeps its own notes in Connected apps in ChatGPT.
BetterSocials connects to ChatGPT through Developer mode. In a normal chat, ChatGPT reads the Inbox and drafts, but it can't send a reply, publish a post or edit a project. Publishing from ChatGPT through BetterSocials needs a Business, Enterprise or Edu workspace.
Claude has no such split. Through the same connector, Claude posts and schedules to Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, Threads, TikTok and LinkedIn.
The platform windows every AI works inside
Instagram only lets a business reply to a DM within 24 hours of the person's last message. After that, the conversation stays closed until they write again, for BetterSocials and most other tools. The table shows the same kind of limit on each platform, from BetterSocials's channel notes checked September 30, 2026.
| Platform | DM replies | Window | Comment to DM |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yes | 24 hours after their message | Yes, a keyword sends the DM | |
| TikTok | Reply only, outside UK and Europe | 48 hours, up to 10 replies | Public reply with the link |
| YouTube | No DM API | None | Public reply with the link |
| LinkedIn profile | No API access | None | Posting only |
TikTok never lets any tool start a DM. A reply is text up to 6,000 characters or one image, never both, and the account must be a Business account. A TikTok comment can't trigger a private DM on any tool outside TikTok's limited rollout in Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia.
LinkedIn hides a personal profile's comments and messages from every app, so comments come from a Company Page. YouTube has no DM API for any tool, so YouTube is public replies only.
The 24-hour window is the reason we'd let an AI answer fast. A draft that waits until tomorrow can miss its window.
Setting it up in Claude and ChatGPT, step by step
Claude connects to BetterSocials in four steps, with your normal login and no API key.
In Claude
- 1Open Settings, then Connectors, then Add custom connector.
- 2Name it BetterSocials and paste `https://bettersocials.ai/api/mcp`.
- 3Click Add, then Connect, and approve the BetterSocials sign-in that opens.
- 4Start a new chat, where the tools show up.
In ChatGPT
- 1Turn on Developer mode in ChatGPT Settings, under Plugins.
- 2Open the Plugins page in the left sidebar and create the plugin there, not from the settings screen.
- 3Name it BetterSocials, paste the same address as the Server URL, and leave Authentication on OAuth.
- 4Tick the confirmation box and click Create.
Both routes use OAuth, a sign-in that lets an app act for you without sharing your password. API keys exist for scripts, Claude Code and Codex, under Settings, then API and AI keys.
Where BetterSocials fits, and what we would do
BetterSocials is an AI social media manager. It gives you one Inbox for comments and DMs across six platforms, AI replies in your voice, keyword comment-to-DM and posting, and the MCP connector puts that Inbox inside Claude or ChatGPT.
AI replies have a Comments setting and a DMs setting, each with Off, Draft for me and Reply in my voice. Draft for me holds every reply for your approval. Reply in my voice answers everyday comments 1 to 5 minutes later and DMs about a minute after they arrive.
Questions wait in Needs reply unless you turn on Answer questions too, which needs at least one AI rule first. When your rules don't cover what someone asked, the message waits for you. After five AI replies in one conversation in a day, the rest wait for you too.
Creator is $29 a month, or $24 billed yearly, for four social accounts and one login. Pro is $49 a month, or $39 billed yearly, for six accounts. Team is $99 a month, or $79 billed yearly, for twelve accounts and unlimited teammates, and every plan has unlimited contacts and a 7-day free trial with a card.
Manychat meters contacts instead. Pro is $39 a month for 2,500 active contacts as of October 2026, and each extra contact costs $0.05, billed monthly. So a busy month past 2,500 contacts adds to the bill, while a BetterSocials plan stays the same.
Our call is simple. Connect Claude if you want the AI to send, and keep ChatGPT for reading and drafting. Write your prices, hours and booking link as AI rules, run Draft for me for a week, then switch comments to Reply in my voice.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need an API key to connect Claude to BetterSocials?+
No. Claude and ChatGPT connect to BetterSocials with your normal login through OAuth, so there's no key to copy. API keys are there for scripts, Claude Code and Codex, under Settings, then API and AI keys.
Can ChatGPT send replies through a connector in a normal chat?+
Not through BetterSocials. In a normal chat, ChatGPT runs the read tools only, so it reads the Inbox and drafts a reply. Sending, posting and editing from ChatGPT need a Business, Enterprise or Edu workspace, while Claude runs the full set.
Which Claude plans allow custom connectors?+
Claude allows custom connectors on Free, which allows one, and on Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise. On Team and Enterprise, an Owner adds them. Once BetterSocials is added, Claude opens a BetterSocials sign-in, you approve it, and the tools show up in your next chat.
Can an AI reply to an Instagram DM after 24 hours?+
No. Instagram only lets a business reply to a DM within 24 hours of the person's last message, for BetterSocials and most other tools. You can still answer in the Instagram app, and the conversation reopens when they write again.
Can an AI turn a TikTok or YouTube comment into a DM?+
YouTube has no DM API for any tool, and a TikTok comment can't trigger a private DM outside TikTok's limited rollout in Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia. On both, a keyword posts a public reply with your link. TikTok DMs people send you can be answered for 48 hours, up to 10 replies.
Will an AI connected to my inbox send things I didn't approve?+
Not in BetterSocials. A send or post from Claude or ChatGPT only happens on your instruction and goes through the same limits as the app. Inside the app, Draft for me holds every reply for your approval, and Reply in my voice sends on its own only after you switch it on.
Is there an open-source social media MCP server on GitHub?+
Yes. Postiz is an open-source scheduler with MCP built in and 37,288 GitHub stars on October 16, 2026, though it has no inbox. HagaiHen's facebook-mcp-server reads and replies to Facebook Page comments and sends DMs with a Page access token, and you host both yourself.
