Can ChatGPT or Claude draft DM replies to interested buyers?

Yes. Claude and ChatGPT can both draft replies to buyers in your Instagram, Facebook and TikTok DMs once a tool like BetterSocials connects them to your inbox. Claude can also send a reply when you tell it to. ChatGPT drafts, and you send from the BetterSocials Inbox.

Speed is the part that decides the sale. Instagram only lets a business tool answer a DM within 24 hours of the person's last message. Answer inside the day and the buyer is still deciding. Leave it for next week and they've bought somewhere else.

Why buyer DMs pile up

Help replying to DMs is one of the reasons people give us when they sign up. The pattern is the same every time. Someone asks the price, the hours or how to book. You see it between clients, you mean to answer, and the thread sinks under ten newer ones.

An AI assistant takes over the typing. You still decide what gets said, because the assistant only knows your prices and your process if you tell it.

How do Claude and ChatGPT get into your DMs?

They need a connector. MCP (Model Context Protocol) is the plug that lets an AI assistant use another app's tools. BetterSocials runs a hosted MCP server, so Claude or ChatGPT can read your inbox and write replies in your voice.

In Claude, open Settings, then Connectors, then Add custom connector. Name it BetterSocials and paste https://bettersocials.ai/api/mcp. Claude opens the BetterSocials sign-in, you approve, and the tools show up in your next chat. You don't copy an API key.

Then ask in plain words: "Read my unanswered DMs that ask about price or booking, draft replies in my voice, and show me before you send." Claude drafts each one. When you say send, it sends.

Custom connectors work on every Claude plan, including Free, which allows one. On Team and Enterprise, an Owner adds them. Every send from Claude happens on your instruction and goes through the same limits as the app.

Can ChatGPT send the reply too?

Not in a normal chat. ChatGPT connects to a custom MCP server through Developer mode, which needs a paid ChatGPT plan and runs on the web. With our connector, a normal ChatGPT chat gets the read tools. It reads your inbox and drafts, and you send.

OpenAI's help center article on Developer mode documents write actions from custom connectors for ChatGPT Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces. Its developer guide also lists Plus and Pro, so OpenAI's own pages disagree. What we see is simpler. In a normal chat the send tool never reaches us, and recreating the connector doesn't change that.

So the ChatGPT routine is draft there, send here. Approve the reply in the BetterSocials Inbox, or connect Claude if you want the assistant to send for you.

What about building it yourself with the API?

You can, and it's more work than it looks. The Claude Messages API and the OpenAI Responses API return text. Neither one reaches Instagram on its own. Tool use, also called function calling, lets the model ask your code to run a send function, and your code calls Meta's Instagram Messaging API.

That means you own the plumbing. Your code fetches new DMs, holds drafts for approval, respects the reply windows and pays for every call, because both APIs bill by usage. A hosted connector does that part for you.

What does Instagram allow an automated tool to send?

Instagram sets the clock, and it applies to every tool:

• A business tool can reply to a DM within 24 hours of the person's last message. Each new message from them restarts the clock.
• Past 24 hours, BetterSocials and most other tools can't send it. You can still answer from the Instagram app itself.
• A private reply to a comment is one message per comment, sent within 7 days of the comment.

Other platforms are tighter. TikTok DMs are reply-only. No tool can start one, and a Business account gets up to 10 replies within 48 hours of the person's last message. YouTube has no DMs that any tool can reach, so YouTube is comments and public replies only.

Should a person approve replies to buyers?

Yes, at least at the start. A buyer asking "how much?" needs your real price. An AI guessing a price does more damage than a slow answer.

Which tools can draft or send DMs from an AI assistant?

A few hosted connectors give Claude or ChatGPT access to social accounts. They differ on whether DMs are included at all. This table comes from each vendor's own documentation, read in October 2026.
