Free social media schedulers that are actually free (2026)

August 28, 2026 · 8 min read

Six ways to schedule social posts for nothing, and two of them are the platforms themselves. Instagram schedules 25 posts a day up to 30 days ahead from its own app. LinkedIn schedules up to three months ahead. Buffer's free plan covers three channels and Metricool's covers one brand, both including an inbox. Meta Business Suite handles Facebook and Instagram together. If you post to one or two platforms, you should not be paying anyone, and this page will not try to talk you into it.

Disclosure

We build BetterSocials, which costs $29 a month and has no free tier. Several tools below are free and better for a lot of people, and the last section is honest about the exact point where free stops working.

The platforms schedule for free, and most people do not know

Start here before installing anything. Three of the big platforms have scheduling built in, and the limits are more generous than the tool vendors would like you to believe.

Instagram's wording on its own help page: "If you have a public Instagram account, you can plan ahead by scheduling reels, photos and carousel posts from the Instagram app" and "you can schedule up to 25 posts a day, up to 30 days in advance" (help.instagram.com, checked August 2026). LinkedIn's: the scheduled time "must be within 10 minutes to 3 months from the current time" (linkedin.com/help, checked August 2026).

TikTok's window has moved more than once since the feature launched, and most articles about it quote a number from an announcement several years old. Open the web uploader and read the date picker rather than trusting anyone's blog on that one, including this one.

Buffer Free: three channels, and the inbox is included

The most useful free plan in the category. Three channels, one user, ten scheduled posts per channel described as "refill anytime", 100 saved ideas, 30 days of analytics, and the Community inbox (buffer.com/pricing, checked August 2026).

The inbox is the part people miss. Buffer includes comment management on the free plan across ten platforms. It covers comments and not direct messages, but for a free tier that is remarkable, and AI reply suggestions are included at five a week.

Best free option if you post to two or three platforms and want one place to do it.

Metricool Free: one brand, better analytics

One brand, up to 20 posts a month, 30 days of analytics history, competitor tracking on five accounts, and an inbox across Instagram, Facebook, Google Business Profile, TikTok and YouTube (metricool.com/pricing, checked August 2026).

Metricool counts by brand rather than by channel, so one business posting to six networks is a single free brand. That makes it the better free plan if you are on more platforms than Buffer's three, as long as 20 posts a month covers your rhythm.

Best free option if you are on four or more platforms and post a few times a week.

What free actually costs you

Nothing here is a trick, but every free tier is buying something with your time or your ceiling. Worth naming honestly.

  • Native scheduling means one app per platform. Free at two platforms. Genuinely expensive at six, because you are paying in mornings.
  • Post caps arrive at the worst moment.Metricool's 20 a month and Buffer's queue limit are fine until launch week, which is exactly when you need to batch.
  • Analytics history gets truncated. Buffer Free and Metricool Free both cap at 30 days, so you can never look at a quarter or compare against last year.
  • The replies are not included anywhere. Free tiers schedule. Buffer and Metricool add a comments inbox, which is generous, but nothing free handles DMs, and nothing free turns a comment into an automatic DM.

When free stops working

There is a fairly sharp line and it is not about follower count.

Free is genuinely enough if

One or two platforms, a handful of posts a week, and your audience replies in public. That describes a large number of people and they should keep their money. Use Instagram's own scheduler, or Buffer Free if you want both platforms in one screen.

Free stops working when

  • You cross three or four platforms and start losing mornings to uploads.
  • You want to batch a month ahead and hit a queue cap.
  • The DMs start mattering, because no free tier covers them.
  • You want a comment containing a keyword to send someone a link automatically while you are asleep. Meta Business Suite has a basic version of this for Facebook and Instagram, capped at five keywords per automation with a single fixed reply (facebook.com/business/help, checked July 2026). Beyond that it is a paid feature everywhere.

Stacking free tools, and when it stops being worth it

The maximum-free setup is real and a lot of people run it: schedule Instagram in the Instagram app, LinkedIn in LinkedIn, TikTok in the web uploader, and use Buffer Free for whatever is left. Total cost, nothing.

The catch is not any single step, it is the switching. Four tools means four logins, four caption boxes, four places to check whether something went out, and no single view of what is scheduled next week. It works, and it costs about an hour a week in navigation once you are posting seriously.

Put a number on your own hour and the maths gets easy. At an hour a week, a $20 tool is breaking even if your time is worth more than $5 an hour. That is not a hard sell, it is arithmetic, and it is also why nobody should buy a tool before they are actually losing that hour.

The cheapest paid options, for when you get there

ToolPrice, annual billingWhat the money buys over free
Metricool Starter$20/moUnlimited posts, unlimited analytics history, reports
Buffer Essentials$5 per channel/moUnlimited queue, more channels, better analytics
BetterSocials$29/mo flatDMs and comments together, keyword automations, replies in your voice

Being straight about our own position: BetterSocials has no free tier, just a 7-day trial with a card. If you are choosing between free tools right now, take Buffer or Metricool. Come back when the replies are the problem rather than the posting, because that is the specific thing we are better at and there is no point pretending otherwise.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best free social media scheduler?+

Buffer's free plan if you post to two or three platforms: three channels, one user, ten queued posts per channel and a comments inbox across ten platforms. Metricool's free plan is better if you are on four or more platforms, because it counts by brand rather than channel, though it caps you at 20 posts a month.

Can you schedule social media posts for free without any tool?+

Yes, on three platforms. Instagram schedules 25 posts a day up to 30 days ahead from its own app with a public account. LinkedIn schedules from 10 minutes to 3 months ahead. TikTok schedules from its web uploader with a business account. Meta Business Suite covers Facebook and Instagram together on desktop.

Is Buffer free forever?+

Buffer has an ongoing free plan rather than a trial: 3 channels, 1 user, 10 scheduled posts per channel, 100 ideas, 30 days of analytics and the Community inbox. AI reply suggestions are capped at 5 a week (buffer.com/pricing, checked August 2026).

Do any free schedulers handle Instagram DMs?+

No. Buffer and Metricool both include an inbox on their free plans but Buffer covers comments only, and no free tier covers direct messages across platforms. DMs are a paid feature everywhere.

Can you get comment-to-DM automation for free?+

A basic version, yes. Meta Business Suite lets you send an automatic private message when someone comments a chosen keyword on Facebook or Instagram, capped at five keywords per automation with a single fixed reply and desktop-only setup. Anything beyond that, including other platforms and replies written in your voice, is paid.

When should I stop using a free scheduler?+

When you cross three or four platforms, when a queue cap blocks you from batching ahead, or when the DMs start mattering. Below that, free is genuinely enough and paying for a tool is waste.
