Adding captions to a video for free got harder in 2026, not easier: CapCut moved auto captions behind Pro at $19.99 a month, VEED's free captions export with a watermark, and Descript's free plan meters you to 60 minutes a month. The routes that still work: the BetterSocials editor captions every word free through the AI you already use, with no watermark, and YouTube's own auto-captions remain free for anything you upload there.

A large share of social video plays muted: feeds autoplay silently, and people watch in places where sound is not an option. No captions means those viewers get a silent film and scroll on. - High contrast beats brand colors. White with a dark edge wins almost everywhere.
