TikTok's DM rules for business accounts, and how to reply within them

!Ten glossy pink beads with the last one glowing, showing TikTok's ten-reply limit per DM contact
TikTok lets a tool reply to a DM only after the person has written to you, and never lets it start one. From their last message you get 48 hours and at most 10 replies, each one text up to 6,000 characters or a single image, and the account has to be a TikTok Business account. BetterSocials brings those DMs into one inbox with your other channels and shows you whether the reply window is still open before you type.
The short answer
Six rules decide what a tool can do with your TikTok messages:
- A tool can only reply to a DM the person started. It can never start one.
- You can send at most 10 replies within 48 hours of the person's last message.
- A reply is text up to 6,000 characters or one image, never both.
- The account must be a TikTok Business account.
- TikTok's DM API is not available to accounts registered in the EEA, Switzerland or the UK.
- A TikTok comment cannot trigger a private DM on any tool, outside TikTok's limited rollout in Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia. So a keyword reply on TikTok is a public comment reply with the link in it.
What are TikTok's DM rules for business accounts, and how do I reply within them?
Answer early and put everything in one message, because the rules give you a short window and a small number of replies.
The person always writes first. A tool can answer a DM someone sent you. It can't open a conversation, so your TikTok DMs are for people who came to you, not for outreach.
The clock runs from their last message. You have 48 hours from it and up to 10 replies inside that time. When they write again, the 48 hours count from the new message.
Ten replies sounds like a lot. Split every answer into two or three short texts, the way most of us message, and it's gone in three to five exchanges. Put the answer and the next step in one reply instead.
Mind the format. Each reply is either text, up to 6,000 characters, or one image. A photo of your price list and a line explaining it are two replies, not one.
None of this applies until a tool can reach your DMs. That takes a TikTok Business account that is not registered in the EEA, Switzerland or the UK, because TikTok's DM API is not available to accounts registered there.
Can I reply to TikTok DMs from a desktop app or tool?
Yes, through a tool connected to TikTok's DM API, as long as your account is a Business account registered outside the EEA, Switzerland and the UK. The DM API is the official connection third-party tools use to read and answer TikTok DMs. Where TikTok doesn't offer it, no tool can reach your DMs, whichever vendor you pick.
Where the API is available, tools differ in what can set off an automation. ManyChat's TikTok triggers are "User sends a message", "User clicks a link" and "User scans a QR code" (read September 11, 2026). A comment trigger exists only in TikTok's limited rollout in Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia. Everywhere else, a TikTok comment cannot trigger a private DM on any tool.
BetterSocials reads your TikTok comments and DMs into the same inbox as your other channels. You answer DMs inside the window, and a keyword comment gets a public reply with your link in it.
Who can send a TikTok business account a DM first?
The person on the other side, every time. A tool can reply to a DM they started and can never start one, so cold DMs through a tool aren't possible on TikTok.
That moves your effort to getting people to write. Ask for the message in the video or the caption. When someone comments a question that needs a private answer, reply in public and ask them to DM you. Once they write, the 48 hours start and you have your 10 replies.
If all you need to hand over is a link, skip the DM. Set a keyword, and anyone who comments it gets a public reply with the link.
What TikTok account types support business messaging?
A TikTok Business account. That is the account type a tool needs before it can read and answer your DMs.
Where the account is registered matters as much. TikTok's DM API is not available to accounts registered in the EEA, Switzerland or the UK, so a Business account registered there can't connect its DMs to any tool.
Check both before you pay for a tool that promises TikTok DMs. If either one rules your account out, no tool can change that.
How do you reply to a TikTok DM on TikTok itself?
Open the conversation in TikTok's own app and answer it by hand. For some accounts that is the one route open. If the account isn't a Business account, or it's registered in the EEA, Switzerland or the UK, no tool can reach its DMs, so you reply in TikTok.
The rules above are the ones TikTok sets for tools that connect to its DM API. Replying by hand means one more app to check. When your Instagram and Facebook messages sit in one inbox and TikTok sits apart, TikTok is the one you open last, and the people who wrote to you there wait the longest.
Where do TikTok's DM rules come from?
TikTok sets them for its DM API, the official connection every third-party tool uses. The limits belong to TikTok, not to the tool, which is why BetterSocials, ManyChat and every other inbox work inside the same ones.
Tool vendors pass them on in their own documentation. ManyChat's, for one, notes that a TikTok comment trigger exists only in the Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia rollout, and that TikTok's DM API is not available to accounts registered in the EEA, Switzerland or the UK.
How BetterSocials does this
The composer shows the live state of TikTok's reply window before you type a word, so you don't write a reply that can't go out.
Your TikTok comments and DMs land in the same inbox as your Instagram and Facebook comments and DMs, and your YouTube, Threads and LinkedIn company page comments. You stop switching apps to catch a TikTok message before its 48 hours run out.
AI drafts replies in your voice, from a voice profile built on your past replies and the AI rules you write in plain language. Drafts wait for your approval unless you set a rule that lets a kind of reply send on its own. You stay the face of the account; the AI does the typing.
On TikTok, keyword replies are public. Someone comments your keyword, and the reply you wrote goes up under their comment with your link in it. There is no flow builder to set up.
The price is flat. Creator is $29 a month ($24 a month billed yearly) with 4 social accounts and one seat. Pro is $49 a month ($39 a month billed yearly) with 5 accounts and one seat. Team is $99 a month ($79 a month billed yearly) with 10 accounts and unlimited team members. Every plan has unlimited contacts, DMs and keyword automations, so nothing is metered per contact the way ManyChat bills active contacts. Each plan starts with a 7-day trial, card required.
The people in your TikTok DMs already came to you. Start your 7-day trial and answer them while the window is open.
Frequently asked questions
Does the TikTok DM reply window reset?+
Yes. The 48 hours are measured from the person's last message, so each new message from them starts a fresh 48 hours. If they go quiet for longer than that, a tool can't reply until they write again.
Can a TikTok comment trigger a private DM?+
Not on any tool, outside TikTok's limited rollout in Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia. A keyword reply on TikTok is a public comment reply with the link in it. BetterSocials works the same way: someone comments your keyword, and your reply with the link goes up under their comment.
How many replies can I send inside the 48-hour window?+
At most 10 within 48 hours of the person's last message. If you use all 10, the next reply waits until they write again.
What format can I use to reply to a TikTok DM?+
Text up to 6,000 characters, or one image. Never both in the same reply, so a photo plus a line of text takes two of your 10 replies.
Where do TikTok's DM rules come from?+
TikTok sets them for its DM API, the official connection every third-party tool uses. That is why the same limits apply in BetterSocials, ManyChat and every other inbox.
Can I use ManyChat for TikTok DMs if I'm in the EU?+
Not if your TikTok account is registered in the EEA, Switzerland or the UK. TikTok's DM API is not available to those accounts, so ManyChat can't reach their DMs, and neither can BetterSocials or any other tool.
