Connect ChatGPT to BetterSocials with Developer mode

Updated August 16, 2026

ChatGPT can run your BetterSocials: read the inbox, draft replies, write and schedule posts, manage comment keywords, pull analytics, and edit videos in the editor. The connection is one pasted address plus a sign in. No API key, nothing to install. Two things trip people up, and both are ChatGPT's side of it: Developer mode is a switch in Settings, but the plugin itself gets made on a completely separate page.

What you need

  • A BetterSocials account. Any plan works, including the free editor.
  • A paid ChatGPT plan, on the web. Developer mode is what lets you add your own plugin, and it is on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu. It does not show up in the phone app.

Connect it

  1. 1Copy this address: https://bettersocials.ai/api/mcp
  2. 2In ChatGPT, open Settings and turn on Developer mode. In the current app it sits under Plugins. Older builds keep the same switch under Security and login.
  3. 3Close Settings. Plugins is a separate page in the left sidebar, and that is where the plugin gets made. Flipping the switch changes nothing you can see, so this is where most people stop.
  4. 4On the Plugins page, hit the plus button at the top right, next to the search box. A panel called New Plugin opens.
  5. 5Put BetterSocials in the Name field. The name is yours to pick, and nothing breaks if you call it something else, but the prompts on this page all say BetterSocials. You steer one of these by saying "use the BetterSocials tools", and it can only follow that if BetterSocials is the name on it. Description is optional, so skip it. The icon is optional too, but without one ChatGPT shows a plain letter tile. Our logo lives at bettersocials.ai/brand/bettersocials-logo-1024.png if you want the plugin to look like BetterSocials — save it, then upload it in the icon field.
  6. 6Under Connection, leave Server URL selected and paste the address into the box below it. Tunnel is for a server running on your own machine, which is not us.
  7. 7Leave Authentication on OAuth. Advanced OAuth settings unlocks once the address is in, and you do not need to open it.
  8. 8Tick I understand and want to continue, under the red warning. Create stays greyed out until the address is in and that box is ticked, and this is the second place people get stuck.
  9. 9Hit Create. ChatGPT opens a BetterSocials sign in. Log in and hit Approve. If you belong to more than one workspace, pick the one ChatGPT should work in.
  10. 10You land on the plugin page with every tool it found listed. Your own plugins live under Drafts, and you do not have to publish anything.

To use it, start a chat, open the plus menu next to the message box, choose Developer mode, and switch BetterSocials on for that conversation. Then ask in plain English.

First things to try

  • "Check my BetterSocials inbox and summarize what needs a reply."
  • "Draft replies to my unanswered comments in my voice. Show me before sending."
  • "Open my most recent video project, cut the silences and filler words, and turn captions on."
  • "Write captions for this transcript and schedule the post for Tuesday morning."
  • "How did my accounts grow over the last 30 days?"

About that red warning

ChatGPT tells you it has not reviewed our server. Every custom plugin gets that warning, ours included, and the tick box is how you say you read it. Worth taking seriously in general: a plugin you add this way can act on your account, so only add servers from a company you would already hand your login to.

Write actions ask first

Reading works straight through. Our read tools are marked read only, so pulling your inbox or your analytics does not interrupt you. Anything that changes something, like scheduling a post or sending a reply, gets a confirmation card with the exact request inside it. Read it before you approve. You can tell ChatGPT to remember an approval for the rest of that conversation, and a fresh chat asks again.

Disconnect it

Two places, either works. In BetterSocials, open Settings, then the API keys tab, and hit Disconnect next to the connected app; access dies immediately. In ChatGPT, delete the plugin on the Plugins page.

If something is off

  • I turned Developer mode on and nothing changed. Nothing does change on the settings screen. Close it and open Plugins in the left sidebar. The plus button that makes the plugin is up there.
  • The Create button is greyed out. It needs two things: the address in the Connection box, and the I understand and want to continue box ticked under the red warning.
  • There is no Developer mode switch. Your plan may not include it, you may be on the phone app, or a workspace admin controls it for you in Business, Enterprise and Edu.
  • ChatGPT ignores the tools. Switch BetterSocials on for that chat from the plus menu, under Developer mode, then ask again.
  • You changed something in BetterSocials and ChatGPT has not caught up. Open the plugin on the Plugins page and hit Refresh to pull the current tools.
  • Tools suddenly return errors. If the connection was disconnected in BetterSocials, delete the plugin in ChatGPT and add it again to sign in fresh.

Frequently asked questions

How do I connect ChatGPT to BetterSocials?+

In ChatGPT, open Settings and turn on Developer mode, which sits under Plugins in the current app. Close Settings, open Plugins in the left sidebar, and hit the plus button. In the New Plugin panel, name it BetterSocials, leave Connection on Server URL and paste https://bettersocials.ai/api/mcp, leave Authentication on OAuth, tick "I understand and want to continue", and hit Create. Then sign in to BetterSocials and hit Approve.

I turned on ChatGPT Developer mode. What do I do next?+

Close Settings. The plugin is made on the Plugins page in the left sidebar, not on the settings screen, which is why the switch looks like it did nothing. Hit the plus button at the top right of that page, fill in the New Plugin panel, and create it. It then appears under Drafts.

Does the ChatGPT plugin have to be named BetterSocials?+

No, the name is a label you choose. Name it BetterSocials anyway. It is what you and ChatGPT both call the thing, so "use the BetterSocials tools" only works if that is the name on it, and every example prompt in our docs assumes it.

Why is the Create button greyed out in ChatGPT’s New Plugin panel?+

Two fields gate it. The MCP server address has to be in the Connection box with Server URL selected, and the "I understand and want to continue" box under the red risk warning has to be ticked. Name, icon and description do not block Create.

Does connecting ChatGPT to BetterSocials need an API key?+

No. ChatGPT signs in with your BetterSocials login through OAuth. API keys exist for tools like Codex and scripts, but the ChatGPT app never needs one.

Why can I not find Developer mode in ChatGPT?+

It needs a paid plan and only appears on the web, not in the phone app. In the current app the switch is under Plugins in Settings; older builds keep it under Security and login. In Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces an admin may control whether it is available at all.

What can ChatGPT do in BetterSocials once connected?+

Read your unified inbox, draft replies in your voice, create, caption and schedule posts, manage comment-to-DM keywords, read analytics, and edit video projects. Reads run without interruption because our read tools are marked read only. Anything that changes something asks you to confirm it first.

How do I disconnect ChatGPT from BetterSocials?+

Either side works. In BetterSocials, open Settings, then the API keys tab, and hit Disconnect next to the connected app; access ends immediately. Or delete the plugin in ChatGPT on the Plugins page.

ChatGPT warns that it has not reviewed the BetterSocials MCP server. Is that a problem?+

Every custom plugin gets that warning, because OpenAI only reviews the ones in its own directory. The tick box is how you confirm you read it. The caution is real in general: a plugin added this way can act on your account, so only add servers from a company you would already trust with your login.

ChatGPT asks me to confirm every post and reply. Can I stop that?+

That is ChatGPT, not BetterSocials. Developer mode confirms write actions by default. You can tell it to remember an approval for a tool for the rest of that conversation, and a new chat asks again. Reads never prompt.

I added a new BetterSocials tool and ChatGPT cannot see it. How do I refresh?+

Open the connection on the ChatGPT Plugins page and hit Refresh. That pulls the current tool list, descriptions and server instructions from BetterSocials. Then start a new chat.
