Is it safe to give an AI agent access to your social accounts?
November 3, 2026 · 10 min read
Giving an AI agent access to your social accounts is safe when the agent signs in with OAuth instead of your password, works through each platform's official API, and only posts or replies when you tell it to. BetterSocials, an AI social media manager for local businesses and creators, gives Claude and ChatGPT a hosted MCP server built that way.
Updated October 27, 2026. Competitor details checked October 16, 2026. BetterSocials is our product, so it goes first, and every other tool here says when it's the better pick.
Four checks before you connect an AI agent
Claude, ChatGPT or any other AI agent should pass four checks before it touches your accounts. MCP, the Model Context Protocol, is the open standard that lets AI assistants operate other software. An MCP server turns a product into tools an assistant can call.
- 1See how it signs in. With OAuth you sign in and approve on the tool's own screen, so you never paste a password into the agent. BetterSocials, Buffer and Metricool connect Claude this way; Ayrshare's server takes an API key only.
- 2See whose API it uses. A server built on the platform's official API works inside the platform's rules. One that drives your own browser session puts the account at terms-of-service risk.
- 3See what goes out without you. The safe setup drafts first and sends only when you say so, or inside rules you wrote. Meta itself warns that "messages generated by AI may not be accurate or appropriate" (help.instagram.com, checked July 2026).
- 4Look for the limits and the off switch. Platforms cap what a business can send, and a good tool shows you the caps and lets you stop it. No tool can promise you'll never get flagged, and we won't either.
How BetterSocials does this
BetterSocials is best for an owner who wants Claude or ChatGPT on the account without handing over a password. Both connect through your normal BetterSocials login with OAuth, so there's no API key to paste. You connect your social accounts on each platform's own sign-in screen, and your password never touches BetterSocials.
In Claude, the connector runs every tool: read the Inbox, draft and send replies in your voice, create and schedule posts, manage keywords and read analytics. ChatGPT connects through Developer mode on a paid plan, on the web. A normal ChatGPT chat can read the Inbox and draft, and sending or posting needs a Business, Enterprise or Edu workspace.
Every AI reply passes a filter before it can send: banned phrases, links stripped where platforms punish them, and length caps. Links you put in your own AI rules, like a booking link, stay in. Automatic DMs come from two places you switch on yourself: a keyword comment on Instagram or Facebook, and the DMs section of AI replies. After five AI replies in one conversation in a day, the rest wait for you.
We build inside Meta's published limits, show you the caps in the interface, and give you a kill switch. Creator is $29 a month, or $24 billed yearly, for four accounts and one login. Pro is $49 a month, or $39 billed yearly, for six accounts, and Team is $99 a month, or $79 billed yearly, for twelve accounts and unlimited teammates.
Setup takes three steps:
- 1Connect your accounts on each platform's own sign-in screen, so your password stays with you.
- 2Add the MCP server to Claude with your normal login, and ask it to draft before it sends.
- 3Write your AI rules, then let everyday replies go out on their own once the drafts sound like you.
Connect an agent with these checks and it does the posting and drafting while you approve what goes out. Connect one without them and it can send replies you never read under your name. Every plan has a 7-day free trial (card required) and unlimited contacts.

Is there a social media MCP server for Claude?
Yes. BetterSocials hosts one at `https://bettersocials.ai/api/mcp`, and Blotato, Buffer, Metricool, Outstand and Ayrshare run hosted servers too. The table below compares five of them on sign-in, replies and price. Competitor details were checked October 16, 2026, and prices are the monthly-billed rate unless a yearly one is listed.
| Server | Sign-in | Comments | DMs | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BetterSocials | OAuth | Yes, six platforms | Yes, three platforms | $29 monthly, four accounts |
| Blotato | OAuth or API key | Yes, Instagram and Facebook posts | Yes, read and send | $29 monthly (Starter) |
| Metricool | OAuth | No, not via MCP | No, not via MCP | From $25 monthly, $20 on annual |
| Outstand | OAuth or API key | Yes, Outstand posts only | No, not in MCP | $19 monthly, 3,000 posts |
| Ayrshare | API key only | Yes, read and reply | Yes, Business or add-on | $149 monthly (Premium) |
Blotato keeps MCP access out of its free trial, and making an API key during the trial ends the trial and starts billing. Because Ayrshare takes a key only, claude.ai on the web and Claude Desktop personal connectors can't use it.
Buffer's MCP signs in with OAuth and is built for posting, with tools for posts, analytics, ideas and templates. Buffer is cheaper per channel, at $5 a channel a month on annual billing, so four channels run $20 a month. BetterSocials Creator is $24 a month billed yearly for four accounts, and the difference buys the DM side of the Inbox, AI replies and keyword comment-to-DM.
Metricool's MCP works on any Metricool plan, Free included, for scheduled posts and analytics, but inbox messages and post comments aren't available through it yet. Setup steps for each server are in The 10 best social media MCP servers for Claude in 2026.
Is there an AI agent that posts to social media and answers the comments?
Yes. BetterSocials posts to Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, Threads, TikTok and LinkedIn, then puts every comment and DM in one Inbox with replies drafted in your voice. You can run it in the app, or from Claude through the MCP server.
The safe kind keeps you in charge of what goes out. In BetterSocials, AI comment replies have three settings under Settings, then AI voice: Off, Draft for me and Reply in my voice. Draft for me writes a reply for each new comment and posts nothing until you approve it, one at a time or with Approve in bulk.
Reply in my voice sends everyday replies, like compliments and feedback, without you checking each one. Questions still wait in Needs reply unless you turn on Answer questions too. That switch only turns on once you've written at least one AI rule, such as your prices, hours or booking link.
AI rules are plain sentences you write, like "never quote prices, send people to the booking link." We cover them in Can you give AI your own instructions for answering customer questions?
Nothing changes when Claude runs the account. Every send or post from an assistant only happens on your instruction and goes through the same limits as the app. Whatever the agent does shows up in your account as if you did it yourself.
Are GitHub social media MCP servers safe to use?
GitHub hosts open-source social media MCP servers, and some are official while others put your account at risk. Before you connect one, check which API it uses, which keys it needs and when it was last updated. Star counts and commit dates below come from the GitHub API on October 16, 2026.
- stickerdaniel/linkedin-mcp-server has 3,897 stars. It reads your LinkedIn feed and inbox and sends DMs through your own browser session instead of LinkedIn's API, and it says it's not affiliated with LinkedIn. That's a terms-of-service risk.
- xdevplatform/xmcp has 862 stars and comes from X's official developer org. It runs the X API as local MCP tools.
- EnesCinr/twitter-mcp has 407 stars, needs your own X API keys and hasn't had a commit since July 17, 2025.
- HagaiHen/facebook-mcp-server has 230 stars. It posts, replies to comments and sends DMs for a Facebook Page with a Page access token.
With a hosted server that signs in through OAuth, you don't handle Page access tokens or API keys yourself, which is why we'd start there.
Can AI agents answer Instagram, Facebook and TikTok comments on their own?
Instagram, Facebook and TikTok all let an agent reply to comments, but each one sets its own DM rules.
- On Instagram and Facebook, a keyword comment can trigger a public reply and a DM with your link.
- Instagram only lets a business reply to a DM within 24 hours of the person's last message. After that, the conversation is closed until they write again.
- On TikTok, a comment can't fire a private DM on any tool outside a rollout in Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia, so the link goes in the public reply.
- TikTok DMs are reply-only: at most 10 replies within 48 hours of the person's last message, from a Business account.
- YouTube has no DM API for any tool, so YouTube is comments and public replies only.
Let an agent handle compliments and thanks by itself. Tie prices, bookings and buyer questions to facts you wrote, or have them wait for you.
How the bigger social media tools handle comments
BetterSocials is the flat-priced pick for one person answering comments and DMs, with unlimited contacts on every plan.
Manychat is the pick if you want keyword comments to send DMs and you don't mind paying by contact. Pro is $39 a month with 2,500 active contacts, and each extra contact costs $0.05, billed monthly, as of October 2026. So the bill grows with every person past 2,500 in a busy month, on top of the $39.
Manychat works on Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp and TikTok, and it leaves posting to a separate tool. Buffer fits if you mostly schedule posts and answer a few comments by hand, since its Community inbox covers comments only, with no DMs.
Hootsuite includes its inbox from Standard at $99 per user a month, and Sprout Social puts its inbox on Standard at $199 per seat a month, both billed annually as of October 2026. Those prices are per person and built for teams, and Hootsuite's inbox does not include YouTube comments.
Frequently asked questions
Is there an official MCP server for social media?+
Yes. BetterSocials hosts one at `https://bettersocials.ai/api/mcp`, and you connect it with your normal BetterSocials login. Many social media tools now host their own MCP server that Claude signs into with OAuth, and X's developer team publishes xmcp for the X API.
Are social media MCP servers on GitHub safe to use?+
Some are. Check whether it uses the platform's API or your browser session, whether you have to paste your own API keys, and when it was last updated. The most-starred LinkedIn server runs through your browser session, a terms-of-service risk, and one X server went 15 months without a commit.
Can an AI agent answer Instagram, Facebook and TikTok comments automatically?+
Yes, inside each platform's rules. An agent can reply to comments on all three, and a keyword comment can send a DM with a link on Instagram and Facebook. On TikTok the link goes in the public reply, because a TikTok comment can't fire a private DM on any tool outside a rollout in Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia.
Can one AI tool publish posts and reply to comments?+
Yes. BetterSocials posts to Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, Threads, TikTok and LinkedIn, then puts every comment and DM in one Inbox with replies drafted in your voice. Creator is $29 a month, or $24 billed yearly, for four accounts and one login. Agorapulse and Metricool also pair scheduling with an inbox, at their own prices and limits.
Does Buffer's MCP server reply to comments?+
Buffer's MCP is built for posting, with tools for posts, analytics, ideas and templates (checked October 16, 2026). Buffer is cheaper per channel, at $5 a channel a month on annual billing, so it fits if you only want Claude to schedule posts. If you want Claude to answer comments and DMs too, BetterSocials runs those tools on the same connection.
Which Claude plans can add a social media MCP server?+
Claude allows custom connectors on Free (one connector), Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise, and on Team and Enterprise an Owner adds them (support.claude.com, read October 16, 2026).
