Descript pricing: what each plan costs and who can skip it
August 21, 2026 · 6 min read
Descript costs $16 to $50 per person per month on annual billing: Hobbyist at $16, Creator at $24, Business at $50, with monthly billing at $24, $35 and $65 (descript.com/pricing, checked August 2026). The free plan is a demo more than a plan: 60 media minutes a month, 720p export, a watermark, and limited filler-word removal. Whether the paid price is fair depends on whether you need a production suite or just clean talking-video edits.

We build BetterSocials, whose free editor overlaps with the slice of Descript most social creators use. Descript is a genuinely good product; this page prices the overlap honestly.
Every Descript plan, priced
| Plan | Annual (per person/mo) | Monthly | What defines it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | $0 | 60 media minutes/mo, 720p, watermark, 100 one-time AI credits |
| Hobbyist | $16 | $24 | 1080p watermark-free export, 400 AI credits/mo |
| Creator | $24 | $35 | 4K export, 800 credits/mo, credit top-ups unlocked |
| Business | $50 | $65 | 1,500 credits/mo, team features, up to 5 seats billed separately |
| Enterprise | Custom | Custom | Talk to sales |
The advertised low numbers are the annual rates; Descript's own toggle says "save up to 35% with annual billing." Budget on the monthly number if you are not ready to prepay a year.
What the free plan actually gives you
Sixty media minutes a month is the number that bites. Transcription is metered through it, so two 30-minute recordings end your month. Exports top out at 720p and carry a watermark (their comparison matrix marks watermark-free export as paid), and the tools Descript is famous for, filler-word removal, studio sound and remove retakes, all run in limited form on free. It is a good way to feel the text-based editing interface. It is not a way to publish weekly.
The AI credits, decoded
Underlord, Descript's AI co-editor, runs on credits: 100 one-time on free, 400 a month on Hobbyist, 800 on Creator, 1,500 on Business. Only Creator and up can buy top-ups. So heavy AI use pushes you toward Creator regardless of your export needs, and the page does not print a per-credit top-up price, which makes the real ceiling hard to budget in advance.
Why the pricing feels controversial
A top result for this search is a Reddit thread titled "I don't like new Descript pricing! Honest review." The complaint pattern is consistent: people who bought Descript as a one-tool answer for podcast plus video found the credit meters and plan gates arriving after they had built their workflow inside it. The prices above are not outrageous for a production suite. They sting when what you actually use is one feature.
Who Descript is worth it for
- Podcasters producing audio and video together. Multitrack, studio sound, transcription and publishing in one desktop app. This is the product at its best, and $16 to $24 is fair for it.
- Teams reviewing edits like documents. Comments on the transcript beat timecodes in an email chain.
Who can skip it entirely
If what drew you to Descript is the core trick, editing video by editing the transcript, cutting silences, removing filler and captioning a talking video, that exact slice is what the BetterSocials editor does free. No card, no 60-minute meter, no watermark at any tier. Silences and pauses are cut automatically on upload, and the AI passes run through the AI you already use (Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or any MCP agent), so there is no credit meter on our side at all. It will not replace Descript's multitrack audio suite. It replaces the $24 a month a social creator was about to spend on cuts and captions. Start editing free.
