Meta Business Suite auto-replies: what they can and can't do in 2026
November 2, 2026 · 10 min read
Meta Business Suite auto-replies are free. Set up on desktop, they send one fixed template when a Facebook or Instagram comment or message has your keyword. Keyword rules hold 5 exact, case-sensitive keywords and can wait 15 minutes. They don't draft replies or reach YouTube. BetterSocials, an AI social media manager for local businesses and creators, does both, from $29 a month for four accounts.
The short answer on Meta's free auto-replies
Meta Business Suite answers the comments and messages you can predict, for free. You write a template and pick the trigger, and Meta sends it on Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp.
Questions you didn't predict, and anything outside Meta's apps, still wait for you. If every question you get is one you can predict, Meta's free tool may be all you need.
A comment management tool is software that pulls the comments and DMs from your accounts into one place and helps you answer them.
Updated October 27, 2026. Meta's limits come from its own help pages, read October 16, 2026, and competitor prices are as of October 2026. We build BetterSocials, so it goes first among the paid tools here, and each other tool says where it's the better pick.
How BetterSocials does this
BetterSocials is best for a small business whose questions outgrow Meta's templates. It puts the comments and DMs from your connected accounts into one Inbox. Keyword comment-to-DM needs no flow builder, and on Instagram and Facebook it sends a DM and a public reply.
No tool can turn a TikTok or YouTube comment into a private DM. There, and on Threads and LinkedIn Company Pages, the keyword posts a public reply with your link.
AI comment replies have three settings, under Settings, then AI voice:
- Off means you write every reply, and AI assist drafts one when you click it.
- Draft for me drafts a reply for each new comment, and nothing posts until you approve it, one at a time or with Approve in bulk.
- Reply in my voice sends everyday replies on its own, and questions wait in Needs reply unless you turn on Answer questions too.
AI replies cover DMs too, with the same three settings in their own section. On Reply in my voice, a DM gets an answer about a minute after it arrives, and when your AI rules don't cover what they asked, it waits for you in Needs reply.
Creator is $29 a month, or $24 billed yearly, for 4 accounts and 1 login. Pro is $49 a month, or $39 billed yearly, for 6 accounts, and Team is $99 a month, or $79 billed yearly, for 12 accounts and unlimited teammates. Every plan has a 7-day free trial (card required) and unlimited contacts.
How do I automatically reply to Instagram comments?
Meta Business Suite is the free way to automatically reply to Instagram comments. Its Comment to message automation will, in Meta's words, "send a message reply to comments on your posts that contain specific keywords or phrases." You set it up on desktop, under Inbox, then Automations.
The reply goes out as a private message, and Meta's help pages describe only that message. If you want a public reply under the comment too, or replies on ad comments, test both on your own page before a launch depends on them.
Paid tools run comment-to-DM through Meta's approved API: a keyword in a comment sends that person a DM, usually with a link. BetterSocials sends the DM on Instagram and Facebook and posts a public reply under the comment too. ManyChat does it on Instagram, and it also works on Messenger, WhatsApp and TikTok.
Every tool on the API follows the same Instagram rule. A comment can get one private reply, sent within 7 days of the comment. It lands in the person's Inbox if they follow you and in Requests if they don't, and the conversation only continues once they write back.
Instagram's saved replies are a different thing: keyboard shortcuts you tap yourself in the mobile app.
What is the best comment management tool for a small business?
BetterSocials is the best pick for a small business that wants every comment and DM in one inbox, with AI replies in its own voice, from $29 a month for four accounts.
Meta Business Suite is the best pick if your customers only reach you on Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp. It's free, it holds messages and comments from those apps in one inbox, and you can assign conversations to the people who help you.
Once you post outside Meta's apps, you need a separate inbox tool. Buffer Essentials is $30 a month for six channels with annual billing, as of October 2026. Its inbox covers comments on your posts but not DMs, so Instagram and Facebook messages stay in the phone app.
Hootsuite and Sprout Social are priced for teams. Hootsuite includes its inbox from Standard at $99 per user a month, and Sprout Social puts its inbox on Standard at $199 per seat a month, both billed annually, as of October 2026. Later's Conversations inbox starts on Growth at $37.50 a month billed yearly, as of October 2026, and has no YouTube or LinkedIn conversations.
At six accounts, Buffer Essentials costs $30 a month on annual billing and BetterSocials Pro costs $39 a month billed yearly, so Buffer is cheaper. What the difference buys is the DM side of the inbox, AI replies in your voice and keyword comment-to-DM.
What is the best AI tool for social media for a small business?
BetterSocials and Meta both put AI on the job that costs you sales when it slips: answering the people who comment and message you. Making posts is a separate job. Pick the tool by which of the two eats your week.
BetterSocials is the pick when replies eat your week. Its AI answers comments and DMs in your voice, from a voice profile built from your past replies. You add AI rules, plain sentences such as "never quote prices, send people to the booking link," and the AI writes from them. There's more on that in can you give AI your own instructions for answering customer questions.
BetterSocials also covers the posting job. It drafts captions in your voice and posts to Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, Threads, LinkedIn and TikTok from one place.
Meta offers two AI options. Instagram's AI Auto Replies answer messages from a creator AI you build in Meta AI Studio, need a professional account and run in the mobile app only. Meta says the feature is "being gradually introduced" and warns that "messages generated by AI may not be accurate or appropriate."
Meta Business Agent is the business-side AI. When you turn it on, it pauses your existing automations rather than upgrading them.
How do you set up automated responses in Meta Business Suite?
Meta Business Suite keeps keyword automations on desktop. "Keyword automations are only available in Meta Business Suite on desktop," according to Meta's automations help page. The five steps below set up a keyword automation and test it.
- 1Open Meta Business Suite on a computer and go to Inbox, then Automations.
- 2Pick a template: Auto reply, Away message, Frequently asked questions, Location, Contact information, Hours, Custom keywords or Comment to message.
- 3For a keyword automation, add up to 5 keywords or phrases, typed exactly as people will write them.
- 4Write the message. A keyword reply can include "photos, videos, buttons, links and other personalizations."
- 5Test it on your own page before a launch depends on it.
Meta also has templates that identify unanswered messages and assign conversations to admins.
Where Meta's free automations stop
Meta Business Suite's automations send what you wrote, when the words match, inside Meta's apps. Each limit below comes from Meta's help pages, read October 16, 2026.
- The message is a fixed template. Every commenter gets the same words, and nothing in the Inbox Automations pages mentions AI drafting.
- Keyword rules hold up to 5 keywords or phrases, and the same keyword can only sit in one automation.
- Matching is case-sensitive, so a message only sends when the keyword matches exactly.
- A keyword automation sends after 15 minutes unless you respond first. A person waiting for a link may have moved on by then.
- When a template automation and a custom keyword automation both trigger, Meta sends the template. Your greeting can beat your keyword reply.
- Comment to message is desktop only. One Meta page says it triggers on keywords or phrases, and another says hashtags.
- Coverage ends at Messenger, Instagram, WhatsApp and comments on your Facebook and Instagram posts. Nothing in the Inbox Automations pages covers YouTube, LinkedIn, Threads or email.
- Some organic messaging features are unavailable for businesses in Europe and Japan, and the WhatsApp inbox is unavailable in the United Kingdom, the European Union and Australia, among others.
On a busy night, the keyword hits get their template and the questions stay where they were, because a template only answers what you predicted.
What comment management tools cost in 2026
Meta Business Suite costs $0, and every other tool below charges by channel, user, seat, contact or plan. The table shows one plan per tool with an inbox or comment-to-DM, with prices as of October 2026.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Meta Business Suite | Free | $0 | None | Facebook and Instagram on no budget |
| BetterSocials | Creator, 4 accounts | $29 a month | Monthly | Comments on six platforms, DMs on three |
| ManyChat | Pro, 2,500 contacts | $39 a month | Monthly | Flow-builder sequences and WhatsApp |
| Buffer | Essentials, 6 channels | $30 a month | Yearly | Scheduling plus comment replies |
| Hootsuite | Standard | $99 per user a month | Yearly | Teams paying per user |
| Sprout Social | Standard | $199 per seat a month | Yearly | Teams paying per seat |

The full breakdown is in how much ManyChat costs past the active contact limit. BetterSocials has unlimited contacts on every plan, so the same month stays $29 for four accounts.

Can Meta Business Suite automatically reply to Instagram comments?+
Yes, with one template. Meta Business Suite's Comment to message automation sends a message reply when a comment on your post contains keywords or phrases you set. It's free and set up on desktop.
