Buffer alternatives in 2026 (and when you should just keep Buffer)

August 26, 2026 · 8 min read

Buffer is genuinely good and cheap, so most people leaving it are leaving for one of two reasons: the per-channel price adds up ($5 a channel means six platforms is $30 a month), or they found out the inbox covers comments and not DMs (buffer.com/pricing, checked August 2026). BetterSocials is $29 flat with comments and DMs together. Metricool is $20 priced per brand. Both fix one of those problems, and which you pick depends on which one is yours.

Disclosure

We build BetterSocials. Buffer is the tool I would recommend to a lot of people over ours, and this page says exactly when.

The two reasons people actually leave Buffer

1. Per-channel pricing stops being cheap

Buffer Essentials is $5 per channel per month on annual billing, $60 a year, which their page describes as saving two months against monthly billing. On two channels that is $10 and it is the best deal in the category.

On six channels it is $30. On six channels plus a second brand it is $60. The model is fair and completely transparent, it just scales with exactly the thing that grows as you get serious. Nobody notices until the third or fourth platform.

2. The inbox is comments only

Buffer's Community inbox is included on every plan including the free one, which is generous. The scope is where people get caught. Buffer's own wording is that you "reply to comments on your Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, Threads, Bluesky, X, TikTok, Google Business Profile, YouTube, and Mastodon posts."

Comments. Not direct messages, not email. So the public conversation is handled and the private one, which is where links get sent and things get bought, stays in the phone app.

BetterSocials: flat price, comments and DMs together

BetterSocials publishes to Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, Threads, LinkedIn and TikTok for $29 a month flat, with no per-channel maths. The comments and the DMs land in the same inbox, grouped by person, with replies drafted the way you write.

It also does the thing Buffer has no equivalent for: put a keyword like GUIDE in a caption and every comment containing it gets a public reply and a DM with your link, automatically, with no flowchart to build first.

  • $29 flat regardless of how many platforms you connect.
  • Unlimited posts and scheduling on every plan, so batching a quarter ahead is fine.
  • YouTube comments and Instagram DMs in one thread per person.
  • Gmail and Outlook in that same thread on Pro.
  • Honest limits: TikTok is posting only, X is not supported, and Buffer covers more platforms than we do.

Best for anyone on four or more platforms, or anyone whose DMs matter.

Metricool: same problem, different fix

If your issue is purely the per-channel bill and you do not need DMs, Metricool solves it differently. It prices per brand, so one business across every network it uses is a single price: free for one brand with up to 20 posts a month, then $20 a month on annual billing and $25 month to month (metricool.com/pricing, checked August 2026).

You also get much deeper analytics than Buffer, with competitor tracking and PDF and PowerPoint exports, plus an inbox on every plan across Instagram, Facebook, Google Business Profile, TikTok and YouTube.

Best for one brand on many platforms where reporting matters.

Agorapulse: if you outgrew the whole category

Occasionally people leave Buffer because they hired someone and need approvals and assignment. Agorapulse is $79 per user per month on annual billing, $99 month to month, with the unified inbox on every tier (agorapulse.com/pricing, checked July 2026).

Best for a small team, not a solo creator.

Decide it in five minutes

Three questions, in this order. Most people can stop after the second.

1. How many channels are you paying for?

Count accounts, not platforms. Under five, Buffer is the cheapest thing here and you should keep it. Six is level with a flat $29. Seven or more and you are paying above flat-rate prices for a tool that covers less.

2. Where do the conversations that make you money happen?

Spend a week noticing. If it is comments, Buffer covers you on every plan including free. If a real share is DMs, Buffer does not cover those at any price, and no amount of channel maths changes that.

3. Do you need anything Buffer reaches that others do not?

X, Bluesky, Pinterest, Mastodon and Google Business Profile. Buffer publishes to ten platforms and most alternatives publish to fewer. If your audience is on one of those, the decision is already made and the rest of this page does not apply.

What you would pay to cover everything

How you would buy itPer monthWhat you still would not have
BetterSocials, one subscription$29 flatTikTok comments, because TikTok keeps that API closed. X is not supported.
The cheap stack: Buffer Essentials on six channels, plus ManyChat Pro$59DMs in one place. Buffer's inbox covers comments only, so every Instagram and Facebook DM stays in the phone app.
The suite stack: Agorapulse Standard, plus ManyChat Pro$108Email in the same thread as the DMs, and replies trained on how you write.
The one most people shop: Sprout Social Standard, plus ManyChat Pro$228The same two things, at seat pricing built for a marketing department.

Every figure is the annual billing rate, which is the cheapest each vendor sells. Buffer is $5 per channel and six channels is $30 (buffer.com/pricing, checked August 2026). Agorapulse Standard is $79 per user (agorapulse.com/pricing, checked July 2026). Sprout Social Standard is $199 per seat, and Standard is where their consolidated inbox starts (sproutsocial.com/pricing, checked August 2026). ManyChat Pro is $29 on annual billing and $39 month to month (manychat.com/pricing, checked July 2026). Month to month, every stack on this table costs more. BetterSocials is $29 either way, and the first 100 founding members keep $19 forever.

When you should stay with Buffer

This is a real recommendation, not a throat-clear. Stay if any of these is true.

  • You post to one or two channels. $5 or $10 a month is unbeatable and switching would cost you money for no gain.
  • Your audience talks to you in public. If the comments are the whole conversation, Buffer's inbox does the job on every plan including free.
  • You need X, Bluesky, Pinterest, Mastodon or Google Business Profile. Buffer reaches ten platforms. BetterSocials reaches six and does not support X at all. If your audience is somewhere we do not go, none of the rest matters.
  • You want a free plan.Buffer's free tier is three channels with ten scheduled posts each and the comments inbox included. BetterSocials has a 7-day trial and no free tier.

Switching

Nothing to migrate. Your posts live on the platforms rather than inside Buffer, so the only thing you lose is your queue, and you can screenshot that in a minute. Connect your accounts elsewhere and you publish the same day.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Buffer alternative?+

BetterSocials at $29 a month flat if you post to four or more platforms or your DMs matter, because Buffer charges per channel and its inbox covers comments only. Metricool at $20 a month if the per-channel bill is your only problem and you want better analytics.

Why does Buffer get expensive?+

It is priced per channel. Essentials is $5 per channel per month on annual billing, which is excellent on two channels ($10) and adds up on six ($30). The model scales with exactly the thing that grows as you get more serious about posting.

Does Buffer handle Instagram DMs?+

No. Buffer's Community inbox is on every plan including free, but it covers comments only. Their own wording is that you "reply to comments on your Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, Threads, Bluesky, X, TikTok, Google Business Profile, YouTube, and Mastodon posts." Direct messages are not included.

Is there a free alternative to Buffer?+

Metricool's free plan covers one brand with up to 20 posts a month and an inbox across five networks. Instagram and LinkedIn also schedule natively for free, with Instagram allowing 25 posts a day up to 30 days out and LinkedIn allowing up to three months.

Should I switch away from Buffer?+

Not if you post to one or two channels, your audience replies in public, you need X or Bluesky or Pinterest, or you rely on the free plan. Switch if you are on four or more platforms and paying per channel for it, or if the conversations that matter happen in your DMs.
