Buffer pricing in 2026: what per-channel actually costs you
August 27, 2026 · 7 min read
Buffer is free for three channels, then $5 per channel per month for Essentials and $10 per channel for Team, both on annual billing (buffer.com/pricing, checked August 2026). The words that decide your bill are "per channel": one Instagram account is $5, and Instagram plus Facebook plus YouTube plus TikTok plus LinkedIn plus Threads is $30. Nothing is hidden, it just is not the number people remember.
Disclosure
We build BetterSocials, which is priced flat and competes with Buffer above about four channels. Below that, Buffer is cheaper and this page says so.
The three Buffer plans
| Plan | Price | Channels | Users | Scheduled posts |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Up to 3 | 1 | 10 per channel, refillable |
| Essentials | $5 per channel per month, $60 a year | As many as you pay for | 1 | Unlimited |
| Team | $10 per channel per month, $120 a year | As many as you pay for | Unlimited | Unlimited |
Both paid prices are the annual billing rate. Buffer describes the yearly option as saving two months against paying monthly, so the month to month rate is a little higher.
What Buffer actually costs at your channel count
This is the table Buffer's own pricing page does not draw for you, and it is the only one that matters.
| Channels | Essentials per month | Per year | Team per month |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 (free plan territory) | $15, or $0 on Free | $180 | $30 |
| 4 | $20 | $240 | $40 |
| 6 | $30 | $360 | $60 |
| 8 | $40 | $480 | $80 |
| 10 | $50 | $600 | $100 |
A channel is one account on one platform. If you run two Instagram accounts, that is two channels. This is where the bill surprises people: a creator with a personal brand and a business page on the same three platforms is paying for six.
The crossover
Buffer is cheaper than a flat $29 subscription up to five channels. At six it is level. At seven and beyond it costs more, and it still does not cover DMs.
Is Buffer free?
Yes, and the free plan is one of the more honest ones in this market. Three channels, one user, ten scheduled posts per channel, 100 saved ideas, 30 days of analytics, and the Community inbox.
Buffer describes the ten-post allowance as "10 scheduled posts per channel, refill anytime," so it caps how much you can have queued rather than how much you can publish in a month. A steady weekly habit fits inside it. Batching a quarter ahead does not. The AI Assistant is included, with reply suggestions capped at five a week on Free.
If you post to three platforms and are not batching a month ahead, the free plan is genuinely enough and you should not pay for anything.
What the price does not include
- Direct messages. The Community inbox is on every plan, and it is comments only. Buffer's wording: you "reply to comments on your Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, Threads, Bluesky, X, TikTok, Google Business Profile, YouTube, and Mastodon posts." This is the single most misunderstood thing about Buffer.
- Email. Not a channel.
- Keyword comment-to-DM automation. No mechanic where someone comments a word and gets a DM with your link. That is a separate subscription, usually ManyChat at $29 a month on annual billing (manychat.com/pricing, checked July 2026).
- A second user on Essentials. Essentials is one user. Adding a person means Team, which doubles the per-channel rate.
The two-account trap
The most common way a Buffer bill surprises someone is running a personal brand and a business presence at the same time.
Say you post as yourself on Instagram, LinkedIn and TikTok, and you also run a company page on Instagram, LinkedIn and Facebook. That feels like four platforms. Buffer counts six channels, so Essentials is $30 a month and Team is $60. Add a second Instagram for a side project and you are at seven.
Nothing dishonest is happening here, and Buffer states the model plainly. It is just that people think in platforms and get billed in accounts, and the two numbers drift apart exactly as a business gets more serious.
Essentials or Team?
The only real difference is people. Essentials is one user at $5 per channel. Team is unlimited users at $10 per channel, and adds content approval workflows and access levels.
If you work alone, Team is buying you nothing and doubles your bill. The moment you bring in an editor or a VA who needs their own login, it becomes the right plan, and the jump is steeper than it looks because it doubles the rate on every channel rather than adding a seat fee. Six channels goes from $30 to $60 to add one person.
Three things worth checking before you commit
Count accounts, not platforms
Do this before you look at the pricing page. It is the single number that sets your bill and it is the one people estimate wrong.
Confirm the inbox scope against your own habits
Spend a week noticing where people actually talk to you. If the answer is mostly comments, Buffer covers it on every plan including free. If a meaningful share is DMs, Buffer will not help with those at any price and you should know that before the annual charge lands.
Start monthly
Annual billing saves two months, which is a genuinely good deal once you are sure. Being sure takes about six weeks. The discount will still be there.
How Buffer compares on price
| Tool | Six platforms, per month | Priced by | DMs included |
|---|---|---|---|
| Metricool Starter | $20 | Brand | Five networks |
| BetterSocials | $29 | Nothing. It is flat | Yes, plus email on Pro |
| Buffer Essentials | $30 | Channel | No |
| Agorapulse | $79 per user | User | Yes, no email |
| Hootsuite Standard | $99 per user | User | Yes, no YouTube comments |
All annual billing, from each vendor's own pricing page, checked August 2026 except Agorapulse (July 2026).
The bill people actually end up with
| How you would buy it | Per month | What you still would not have |
|---|---|---|
| BetterSocials, one subscription | $29 flat | TikTok comments, because TikTok keeps that API closed. X is not supported. |
| The cheap stack: Buffer Essentials on six channels, plus ManyChat Pro | $59 | DMs in one place. Buffer's inbox covers comments only, so every Instagram and Facebook DM stays in the phone app. |
| The suite stack: Agorapulse Standard, plus ManyChat Pro | $108 | Email in the same thread as the DMs, and replies trained on how you write. |
| The one most people shop: Sprout Social Standard, plus ManyChat Pro | $228 | The same two things, at seat pricing built for a marketing department. |
Every figure is the annual billing rate, which is the cheapest each vendor sells. Buffer is $5 per channel and six channels is $30 (buffer.com/pricing, checked August 2026). Agorapulse Standard is $79 per user (agorapulse.com/pricing, checked July 2026). Sprout Social Standard is $199 per seat, and Standard is where their consolidated inbox starts (sproutsocial.com/pricing, checked August 2026). ManyChat Pro is $29 on annual billing and $39 month to month (manychat.com/pricing, checked July 2026). Month to month, every stack on this table costs more. BetterSocials is $29 either way, and the first 100 founding members keep $19 forever.
Is Buffer worth it?
Yes, if
You post to one to five channels and your audience replies in public. At that range nothing beats it on price, the interface is the best in the category, and the free plan is real. I would recommend it over our own product to a lot of people.
Reconsider, if
You are past six channels, you run more than one account per platform, or the conversations that turn into money happen in your DMs. At that point you are paying scheduler prices for half the job.
