Can ChatGPT edit videos? Yes, if you connect it to an editor

August 21, 2026 · 6 min read

ChatGPT cannot cut a video on its own. It has no timeline and no renderer, so pasting a clip into the chat gets you advice, not an edit. What changed in 2026 is that ChatGPT can now drive a real editor through a plugin: connect it to the BetterSocials editor (free, no card) and you can tell it "cut the retakes, tighten the pauses, caption it" and watch the cuts land in your open tab. ChatCut sells the same idea from $25 a month.

Disclosure

We build BetterSocials, including the free AI video editor and the ChatGPT plugin described below. The setup steps are the same ones on our developers page.

What ChatGPT can and cannot do with video

  • On its own: it can plan an edit, write a script, suggest cuts and hooks. It cannot open your footage, cut a frame, or export anything.
  • With a plugin that drives an editor: it can transcribe your clip, cut silences and retakes, remove filler words, add captions and text, place overlays and sounds, and leave the project open for you to finish. The editor does the rendering; ChatGPT does the deciding.

That second mode is new, and it is the honest answer to "ChatGPT video editor." Nobody has taught a chat window to render video. The working products connect the chat to an editor that already can.

Make ChatGPT a video editor in about three minutes

You need a paid ChatGPT plan on the web (Developer mode is gated to paid plans) and a free BetterSocials account. Then:

  1. Sign up free at bettersocials.ai/free-editor and drop a video into the editor. The silences and long pauses are already cut when it opens.
  2. In ChatGPT: Settings, turn on Developer mode (under Plugins), then open Plugins in the left sidebar and hit the plus button. Name it BetterSocials, leave Connection on Server URL, paste https://bettersocials.ai/api/mcp, leave Authentication on OAuth, and Create.
  3. ChatGPT opens a BetterSocials sign-in. Approve it, switch the plugin on from the composer's plus menu, and tell it what you want: "use the BetterSocials tools to remove the filler words and bad takes from my latest project, then caption it."

The edits appear live in your editor tab, every cut struck through in the transcript so you can see exactly what left. Export stays a human button on purpose: you check the work, then press it. Write actions ask you to confirm each time, and Settings → Connected apps disconnects the plugin in one click.

What this costs

ChatGPT + BetterSocials plugin$0 on our sideFull editor, auto silence cuts, transcript editing, no watermark

Asking ChatGPT alone$0Advice and a shot list. You still do every cut by hand.

ChatCut's pricing from chatcut.io/pricing, checked August 2026. It is a real product with a credit model and its own generation tools built in; if you want AI video generation in the same place, it earns a look. If the job is editing footage you already recorded, the free route covers it.

What to actually ask for

Prompts that map to real edits in the editor:

  • "Remove the bad takes and false starts, keep the last version of each line."
  • "Cut the ums and filler words, then tighten pauses over half a second."
  • "Caption every word in my style and add a title card with the hook."
  • "Find the strongest 30 seconds for a vertical clip."

The same plugin drives the rest of BetterSocials too, so once the edit is done you can ask it to draft the caption and schedule the post. That part is the paid product; the editor never is.

Not a ChatGPT household?

The same connection works from Claude (Settings → Connectors → Add custom connector, paste the same address), Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, and anything else that speaks MCP. The editor does not care which AI you bring.

Frequently asked questions

Can ChatGPT edit videos?+

Not by itself. ChatGPT has no timeline or renderer. Connected to an editor through a plugin, it can transcribe footage, cut silences and retakes, remove filler words and add captions. The BetterSocials plugin does this with a free editor; ChatCut sells a similar setup from $25 a month.

How do I connect ChatGPT to a video editor?+

Turn on Developer mode in ChatGPT settings (paid plan required), open Plugins in the sidebar, create a plugin pointed at https://bettersocials.ai/api/mcp with OAuth, and approve the sign-in. Then tell it to use the BetterSocials tools on your project.

Is there a free ChatGPT video editor?+

The BetterSocials editor is free with no card, and its ChatGPT plugin is free too. You pay only for your own ChatGPT plan. Exports carry no watermark. ChatCut, the other plugin-based editor, starts at $25 a month and advertises no free tier.

Does ChatGPT export the video?+

No. In BetterSocials the AI makes the edits and every cut shows struck through in the transcript, but export is a human button. You check the work in your tab and press it yourself.

Can Claude do the same thing?+

Yes. Claude connects through Settings, Connectors, Add custom connector with the same address, and Claude Code, Codex and Cursor connect over MCP as well. The editor works with whichever AI you already use.
