What is ManyChat? What it does, what it costs, and who it's for (2026)
August 18, 2026 · 9 min read
ManyChat is a chat marketing platform that automates DMs and comment replies across seven channels: Instagram, TikTok, Facebook Messenger, Telegram, WhatsApp, SMS, and email. Plans for new accounts run from a free tier covering 25 active contacts a month up to $139 a month on annual billing ($199 month to month) for 25,000, and every tier meters how many people your automations talk to (manychat.com/pricing, checked July 2026). It is the biggest name in its category, used by more than 1 million businesses by its own count. Here is what it actually does, what it costs after the March 2026 pricing change, where it is genuinely strong, and which kind of user has quietly outgrown it.
Full disclosure
We build BetterSocials, which competes with ManyChat for solo creators. Read this explainer knowing that. Every ManyChat number here comes from their own pricing and help pages, checked July 2026, and where ManyChat is the stronger choice we say so plainly.
What ManyChat is
ManyChat calls its own category chat marketing. The homepage title is literally "Chat Marketing Made Easy with Manychat". The idea: instead of a human answering every DM and comment, a bot holds those conversations for you, at scale, following scripts you design. You build the script once, and the bot runs it on every person who triggers it.
It is also a serious company, not a side project. ManyChat announced a $140 million round led by Summit Partners in April 2025, says it is profitable, and holds official partner badges from both Meta and TikTok. Depending on which of their pages you read, they report 1 million or nearly 1.5 million businesses on the platform. Those are their own numbers, but the scale is real: in comment and DM automation, ManyChat is the incumbent everyone else gets compared to.
What ManyChat actually does
The core of the product is a visual flow builder. A flow starts with a trigger, most famously a keyword comment: you post "comment GUIDE and I will send it," someone comments the word, and the flow picks them up. From there you chain steps on a canvas: send a message, offer buttons, branch on the answer, wait, tag the person, deliver a link, or capture an email or phone number. Comment-to-DM, the mechanic that made ManyChat famous, is one flow shape among many.
The channel list is wide. Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook Messenger cover the social side. Telegram is there too. WhatsApp, SMS, and email arrive at the Pro tier ($29 a month on annual billing) and up, which is where ManyChat stops being a comment tool and becomes a messaging funnel: capture a contact on Instagram, then follow up on WhatsApp or by email. On new plans, email sends are capped by tier.
Day to day, running ManyChat means building and maintaining flows. Each campaign is its own build: design it, test it, publish it, fix it when a step misfires. Power users get genuinely far with this. It is also the trade at the center of everything below, because the flow builder is both the product's depth and its ongoing time cost.
What ManyChat costs in 2026
ManyChat moved to a new pricing model on March 2, 2026. It applies to accounts created on or after that date; older accounts stay on their legacy plans for now. The numbers below are the new model at its annual billing rates, which is what the pricing page shows by default (manychat.com/pricing, checked July 2026). Pay month to month instead and the paid tiers run $17, $39, $99, and $199, with overage at $0.10, $0.05, $0.025, and $0.004 per extra contact.
| Tier | Per month (annual billing) | Active contacts included | Channels | Overage per extra contact (annual billing) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | 25 | Any 2 of Instagram, TikTok, Messenger, Telegram | n/a |
| Essential | $14 | 250 | Any 2 of the same four | $0.082 |
| Pro (AI included) | $29 | 2,500 | Any 3, adds WhatsApp, SMS, email | $0.038 |
| Business (AI included) | $69 | 7,500 | Unlimited | $0.018 |
| Advanced (AI included) | $139 | 25,000 | Unlimited | $0.0028 |
The unit that matters is the active contact: a person your automations interacted with during the monthly billing period. Go over your tier's allowance and the overage bills per contact, monthly, even if you paid for a year up front. Run the arithmetic on their published rates and 10,000 active contacts in a month lands around $114 on Business annual billing, $161.50 on Business month to month, or a flat $139 on Advanced annual (computed from manychat.com/pricing, checked July 2026).
Two more things worth knowing. The free plan covers 25 active contacts a month, enough to test a flow but not to run one on a real audience. And there is a 14-day free trial on Essential and Pro, with no card needed for the free plan. The full tier-by-tier breakdown, including how the meter behaves when a post takes off, is in ManyChat pricing explained.
The mechanic to sit with is the meter itself. Your bill tracks how many people engage with your automations, so a good month costs more than a quiet one. For a business doing planned WhatsApp campaigns, that is a predictable cost of goods. For a creator whose reel might do 40 views or 400,000, it means the invoice is a lottery ticket drawn by the algorithm.
The AI, as their own pages describe it
ManyChat has AI, with specific boundaries. It gates at $29 a month either way: bundled into Pro and above on new plans ($39 month to month), and a $29 add-on on legacy plans. Their help center describes Manychat AI as "currently in beta."
The most interesting piece is AI Comments, their closest thing to automated replies that sound like a person. It trains on your past replies so the tone matches yours, which is real and worth crediting. Its scope, per their own pages: Instagram only, and positive comments only. It is not keyword-triggered; you switch it on as a skill. So the AI that replies like you covers one channel and one sentiment, while everything else runs on the scripted flows described above.
What ManyChat is genuinely good at
- The deepest flow builder in the category. If you can imagine a branching conversation, you can probably build it here, and no cheaper tool matches that ceiling.
- TikTok comment and DM automation, for TikTok Business accounts outside the UK and EU. TikTok's API is closed to all but a few partners, and ManyChat is one of them. Most tools have nothing on TikTok at all.
- WhatsApp and SMS as revenue channels. For businesses that close sales in WhatsApp threads, ManyChat at $29 and up on annual billing is a legitimate engine, and per-contact pricing maps reasonably well to that use.
- Official standing with the platforms: Meta Business Partner and TikTok Marketing Partner badges, over a million businesses by their own count, and a war chest from the 2025 raise. It is not going anywhere.
What ManyChat does not do
Three gaps matter, and they are structural rather than missing features on a roadmap.
First, there is no YouTube. Not on the pricing matrix, not in the navigation, not on any product page (checked July 2026). If your audience comments under videos, ManyChat never sees those people. The full picture is in does ManyChat work with YouTube.
Second, everything is a flow you build. There is no mode where you type a keyword and a message and walk away; each automation is a canvas you design and maintain. That depth is the point for power users and a tax for everyone else.
Third, the contact meter. Billing by active contacts means the price of winning is more contacts, which is more money. The free tier's 25 contacts a month makes the on-ramp thin, and the overage line on every paid tier means the bill is never quite fixed.
Who ManyChat genuinely fits
A business that sells through WhatsApp or SMS and wants one funnel from social comment to purchase. A team with someone who enjoys living in a flow builder and will keep the automations tuned. A TikTok Business account outside the UK and EU that wants comment and DM automation, because almost nobody else offers it. For those three readers, ManyChat is the honest recommendation and the $29 Pro tier (annual billing) is a fair price for what it does.
Who it does not fit, and what the alternative looks like
The reader ManyChat fits least is the solo creator whose audience is spread across platforms and whose whole brand is sounding like themselves. Scripted flows read as scripted, YouTube is not covered at all, and the contact meter punishes exactly the months a creator works for. ManyChat named its practice chat marketing: a bot talks for you. The counter-practice is answering every comment and DM as you, in your voice, with the relationship owned by you rather than metered. The two approaches are compared properly in the ManyChat alternative for creators.
That second practice is what BetterSocials is built for. A keyword turns a comment into a DM on Instagram and Facebook with no flow builder, just the keyword and the message. On YouTube, Threads, and LinkedIn it posts the public reply with your link. AI drafts every reply in your voice, trained on how you actually write, on every comment platform it covers, YouTube included. And the pricing is flat: $29 a month, unlimited contacts, AI on every tier, so a viral month costs the same as a quiet one. Founding members lock $19 a month for life while the first 100 spots last. The wider field, including the cheap Instagram-only tools, is ranked in the best ManyChat alternatives for creators.
The bottom line
ManyChat in one paragraph
ManyChat is the incumbent chat marketing platform: a mature flow builder that automates conversations on Instagram, TikTok, Messenger, Telegram, WhatsApp, SMS, and email, priced by active contacts from free to $139 a month (annual billing) on the plans introduced in March 2026. It is excellent at scripted funnels, one of very few tools with TikTok comment and DM automation, has AI in beta bundled at $29 and up on annual billing, and has no YouTube support anywhere.
How to decide
If your business runs on WhatsApp funnels or you want the deepest builder available, take the 14-day trial and judge the builder for yourself. If you are a solo creator who wants replies that sound like you across every platform your audience uses, including YouTube, start with BetterSocials's 7-day trial instead. And if you are weighing the spend either way, is ManyChat worth it runs the numbers case by case.
