How to leave ManyChat: the complete migration guide for creators

September 1, 2026 · 10 min read

Leaving ManyChat cleanly takes five steps, and four of them happen before you press cancel: export your contact data, document every keyword and automation by hand, save the conversations you care about, then cancel ahead of your renewal date and rebuild on a tool that fits how you work now. The order matters because the export routes ManyChat documents all run through automations and broadcasts, which need a working plan behind them, and because past conversation history has no export path at all (help.manychat.com, checked July 2026). Most migration guides skip those two facts. This one is built around them.

Full disclosure

We build BetterSocials, which competes with ManyChat for creators, so we have a side. Every ManyChat claim below comes from their own help center and pricing pages, checked July 2026, or carries a dated attribution to a specific thread. And the most important claim in this guide cuts against us as much as anyone: no tool can import your ManyChat keywords or automations, ours included.

The five steps, in order

Here is the whole migration as a checklist. Every step gets its own section below with the exact mechanics.

  1. 1Export your contact data while your paid plan is still active, through the Google Sheets automation route. There is no one-click CSV of your whole list.
  2. 2Document every keyword and automation by hand: screenshots plus a spreadsheet of triggers, public replies, DM text, and links.
  3. 3Save the conversations that matter manually. Past conversation history cannot be exported.
  4. 4Cancel from Settings, then Billing, ahead of your renewal date. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the billing period you already paid for, so you keep access while you finish steps 1 to 3.
  5. 5Rebuild on the replacement that matches your channels: Meta's free native tools for a basic Instagram keyword DM, or BetterSocials for replies in your voice across platforms including YouTube.

Step 1: export your contacts while your plan still works

Start with the surprise: ManyChat has no button that exports your whole contact list to a CSV. Its help center documents three export routes, and every one is indirect (help.manychat.com, checked July 2026).

  • A per-automation response export. Automations that collected replies through a data collection block have a responses view with an Export .csv button. It covers responses to that block, not your list.
  • The Google Sheets integration. You build an automation with an Insert row action mapped to the fields you want (name, email, phone, tags, custom fields), set it live, then send it to your audience with a broadcast. Each contact the broadcast reaches lands as a row in your sheet.
  • A developer route. Dev Tools can fire an External Request that posts Full Contact Data as JSON to a server you run. Real, but only useful if you have somewhere to point it.

The Contacts tab has bulk actions, but the only exports there are Facebook page-scoped IDs for ad targeting and a copy of custom fields into system fields, neither of which gives you a usable contact file (help.manychat.com, checked July 2026). The Google Sheets route is the practical one for most creators, and a July 2025 thread on ManyChat's own community forum confirms both the gap and the workaround: there is no bulk-action export, and the sheet captures each contact's most recent opt-in event rather than their full history.

Run this before you cancel, not after. The route depends on a live automation and a broadcast across your whole audience, and once your account lands on the free plan, the cap is 25 active contacts a month on accounts created since March 2, 2026 (manychat.com/pricing, checked July 2026). A broadcast that touches a real audience blows through that cap immediately. Two honest caveats even on a paid plan: a broadcast only reaches the people Meta's messaging rules still let you message, and it arrives as a real message in your contacts' inboxes, so wrap the export in something worth receiving rather than a blank ping.

Step 2: document your keywords and automations by hand

No tool can import your ManyChat keywords or automations, and that includes BetterSocials. Automations live in ManyChat's flow builder format, nothing else reads it, and any vendor implying a one-click migration is selling something. The transferable asset is not the automation file. It is your knowledge of what worked, and that fits in a spreadsheet.

For every active automation, capture:

  • The trigger: the keyword, comment trigger, or story reply, and which post or reel it is attached to.
  • The public comment reply, if the automation posts one.
  • The DM text and the link it sends, including any UTM tags.
  • The tags or fields it sets, and roughly how often it fires. Open each automation's stats while you still have access; those numbers tell you what to rebuild first.

Screenshot each automation as backup, but the spreadsheet is what you will actually rebuild from. This audit is also where dead automations go to die. Most creators find a handful of keywords produced nearly all the results, so the rebuild list is usually shorter than the account made it look.

Step 3: accept what stays behind

Conversation history does not leave ManyChat. The help center's export documentation covers contact data only, with no export path for past conversations anywhere in it (help.manychat.com, checked July 2026). An answer on ManyChat's own community forum from August 2025 puts it plainly: "There is no way to export past conversations." The same answer flags the limit of the going-forward workaround: a Google Sheets automation can log new messages as they arrive, but messages sent manually by agents cannot be exported, and nothing recovers the threads that already happened.

In practice, the DM threads where you closed sales, answered objections, and learned what your audience actually asks are staying on ManyChat's servers. If specific conversations matter, say an ongoing brand deal or a customer mid-purchase, screenshot them or copy the thread out by hand from the live chat view before you go. It is manual and tedious, and it is also the only option, which is worth knowing before your renewal date rather than after it.

This is a fair filter for whatever you move to next, too. Ask any replacement tool where your conversation data lives and how it leaves.

Step 4: cancel ahead of your renewal date

The cancellation itself is three clicks (help.manychat.com, checked July 2026):

  1. 1Go to Settings, then Billing, and click Cancel Subscription.
  2. 2Pick a cancellation reason, add a description, and click Next.
  3. 3Confirm with Cancel My Subscription.

Cancellation is not immediate. Your subscription enters a Pending cancellation state and ends when the billing period you already paid for runs out, with paid features working until then. That is genuinely useful for a migration: cancel first if you like, then use the remaining paid days to run the contact export and finish your documentation. Time the click carefully, though. ManyChat's help center warns that if your next billing cycle has already started, the system will still attempt the charge. Cancel at least a few days before renewal, and if you are inside the 14-day trial on Essential or Pro, cancel before it ends, because the trial converts to a paid month automatically.

Your data survives the downgrade. ManyChat's billing FAQ says you won't lose any data or contacts when you cancel, and automations stay in the account with paid features switched off (help.manychat.com, checked July 2026). Kept is not the same as usable, though: the account lands on the free plan and its 25 active contacts a month on accounts created since March 2, 2026. If the contact meter and its overage math are part of why you are leaving, the full breakdown is in our ManyChat pricing guide, and what the free plan does and does not cover is in is ManyChat free in 2026.

Step 5: choose what you rebuild on

The honest starting question is what you actually used ManyChat for. Two different creators leave ManyChat, and they should land in different places.

If you only ran a basic Instagram keyword DM

You may not need a paid tool at all. Meta Business Suite ships free inbox automations, including a comment-to-message template that sends the same DM to every commenter, and our Instagram auto-reply guide walks through the native setup and where it runs out. If you want slightly more than native, the cheap Instagram pack does one job at a low price (each tool's own pricing page, checked July 2026). ReplyRush is free for 1,500 DMs a month, then $10. LinkDM is free for 1,000 DMs a month, then $19, with template replies. CreatorFlow is Instagram only, free for 500 DMs a month, then $15, also templates. InstantDM starts at $9.99 a month with AI replies, though not trained on your voice. None of them covers YouTube, and none puts your channels in one inbox, but for a single-platform keyword DM they are fine.

If you want replies in your voice across platforms, including YouTube

This is the creator BetterSocials is built for, and it is where the rebuild is fastest. There is no ManyChat import here either, because none can exist anywhere. What there is instead: a keyword in BetterSocials is one short form, the keyword, the DM it sends, and the public reply it posts, so rebuilding from your step 2 spreadsheet takes minutes per keyword rather than an afternoon per automation. There is no flow builder to relearn.

The structural differences from ManyChat: one inbox for Instagram and Facebook comments and DMs, YouTube comments, Threads comments, and LinkedIn, with email on Pro and Team. AI drafts every reply in your voice and learns from your edits, on every tier. Keywords send the DM on Instagram and Facebook and post a public reply with your link on YouTube, Threads, and LinkedIn. And pricing is flat with unlimited contacts, so the meter you just left does not follow you: $29 a month, $19 for life for the first 100 founding members, with a 7-day trial. If you want to weigh the full field before committing, the ManyChat alternatives roundup scores every serious option against the same criteria.

The clean exit, in one afternoon

Export while your plan works, document by hand, save the threads that matter, cancel ahead of renewal, rebuild where your audience actually is. None of it is hard, and only the export has a real deadline. The creators who regret the way they left are almost always the ones who cancelled first and found the export gates afterward. Do it in the order above and there is nothing left on the table.

And if the reason you are leaving is bigger than the bill, because you want to answer people rather than run flows at them, BetterSocials is built for exactly that: every comment and DM answered in your voice, from one inbox, at a flat price. Bring your spreadsheet. The rebuild takes minutes per keyword.

Frequently asked questions

How do I export my contacts from ManyChat?+

There is no one-click export of your whole contact list to CSV. ManyChat's help center documents three routes (checked July 2026): a per-automation response CSV, a Google Sheets integration you wire into an automation and trigger with a broadcast, and a developer External Request that posts Full Contact Data as JSON to your own server. The Contacts tab's bulk actions only export Facebook page-scoped IDs. Run the export while your paid plan is active, because the routes depend on automations and broadcasts.

Can I export my conversation history from ManyChat?+

No. ManyChat's help center documents no way to export past conversations (checked July 2026), and an August 2025 answer on ManyChat's own community forum states it directly: "There is no way to export past conversations." A Google Sheets automation can log new automated messages going forward, but manually sent agent messages are not captured and past threads cannot be recovered. Screenshot or hand-copy the conversations that matter before you cancel.

Does cancelling ManyChat delete my data?+

No. ManyChat's billing FAQ says you will not lose any data or contacts when you cancel, and your automations stay in the account with paid features switched off (help.manychat.com, checked July 2026). The account continues on the free plan, which covers 25 active contacts a month on accounts created since March 2, 2026, so the data is kept but a real audience is no longer workable there.

When does a ManyChat cancellation take effect?+

At the end of the billing period you already paid for, not immediately. After you cancel from Settings, then Billing, the subscription shows as Pending cancellation and paid features keep working until the cycle ends. Cancel a few days before your renewal date, because ManyChat warns that a billing cycle that has already started will still be charged, and a 14-day Essential or Pro trial converts to a paid month automatically.

Can I import my ManyChat keywords and automations into another tool?+

No. No tool can import ManyChat keywords or automations, including BetterSocials. Automations live in ManyChat's own flow builder format, so the honest migration is manual: record each trigger, public reply, DM text, and link in a spreadsheet, then rebuild. In BetterSocials a keyword is one short form rather than a diagram you draw, so each one takes minutes to recreate.

What should I replace ManyChat with?+

It depends on what you used. For a basic Instagram keyword DM, Meta Business Suite has free native automations, and cheap Instagram tools like ReplyRush start at $10 a month after a free tier. For replies in your voice across Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, Threads, and LinkedIn in one inbox, BetterSocials is the pick: flat $29 a month with unlimited contacts, AI on every tier, a 7-day trial, and $19 for life for the first 100 founding members.
