Is ManyChat free in 2026? The 25-contact limit, explained

August 7, 2026 · 9 min read

Yes, ManyChat has a free plan, and for accounts created on or after March 2, 2026 it covers 25 active contacts per month on any two of Instagram, TikTok, Messenger, and Telegram, with no card required (manychat.com/pricing, checked July 2026). An active contact is anyone your account interacts with during the billing month, and that includes every person who receives the automated DM your keyword sends. So the free plan lasts exactly as long as it takes 25 people to comment your keyword, which one ordinary Reel can manage in a day. Here is what the free plan actually includes, what it costs to cross contact number 26, which competitors give you a genuinely bigger free tier, and why BetterSocials deliberately does not have one.

Full disclosure

We build BetterSocials, which competes with ManyChat for creators, and BetterSocials has no free plan, so we have no free tier to sell you here. Every ManyChat number below comes from their own pricing page, checked July 2026, and the free alternatives section recommends four competitors by name.

What the ManyChat free plan includes in 2026

ManyChat sells five tiers, and Free is the bottom rung: $0 for 25 active contacts per month on any two channels chosen from Instagram, TikTok, Facebook Messenger, and Telegram (manychat.com/pricing, checked July 2026). No card is needed to start, and keyword automations run on it, so the comment-to-DM mechanic is there to try. WhatsApp, SMS, and email are not; those start at higher tiers.

The word doing the work in that sentence is "active". ManyChat does not bill by followers or by list size. It counts the people your account interacted with during the billing month, in either direction, and someone who comments your keyword and receives your automated DM counts even if they never write back. The counter resets each month, and so does the cap.

One scope note before you compare notes with a friend. These numbers apply to accounts created on or after March 2, 2026. Older accounts stay on their legacy plans, and per ManyChat's help center they cannot switch to the new plans yet. If you are signing up today, the 25-contact free plan is your starting point regardless of what an older account holder tells you theirs looks like.

The 25-contact math: how far free actually goes

No invented statistics needed here, just arithmetic. You set up one keyword automation, the thing ManyChat exists to do. Every person who comments the keyword gets the DM, and every one of them becomes an active contact. Person number 25 spends the month's allowance. That is not a viral moment. A Reel that performs modestly can collect 25 keyword comments in its first day, and a comment-to-DM automation exists precisely to invite those comments. The plan you chose because it was free is finished for the month by the exact behavior you installed it to encourage.

It was not always this tight. Third-party reports of the March 2026 pricing change put the previous free cap at 1,000 contacts. ManyChat's own pages confirm today's 25, but we could not verify the old number on an official page, so treat the 1,000 as reported rather than official. Either way, the direction is not in dispute: the free tier that once let a small creator run keyword automations indefinitely now works as a test drive, and a short one.

To be fair to ManyChat, a test drive has real value. Twenty-five contacts is enough to watch a comment become a DM, check the automation fires, and decide whether the mechanic fits your content. If that is all you need this month, the free plan does it and costs nothing. The problem only starts when you try to live on it.

What happens when you pass 25 contacts

The pricing page lists no overage rate for the free plan, so the path past 25 is a paid tier. For accounts created on or after March 2, 2026, the first rung is Essential at $14 per month on annual billing, $17 month to month, for 250 active contacts. Overage past that cap bills at $0.10 per extra contact on monthly billing and $0.082 on annual (manychat.com/pricing, checked July 2026). There is a 14-day free trial on Essential and Pro, which is a more honest way to evaluate the product than the 25-contact plan.

Two things to know before you budget around $14. First, the overage math compounds quietly: at $0.10 per extra contact on monthly billing, an Essential account that reaches 400 active contacts pays $32 in total, most of the way to Pro at $39, and the annual rates cross Pro's $29 around 430 contacts. We walk through the full tier and overage math, with worked examples at real audience sizes, in ManyChat pricing explained. Second, none of the cheap tiers includes AI. ManyChat's AI arrives at $29 per month either way: bundled into Pro and above on new plans ($39 month to month), a $29 add-on on legacy plans. Free and Essential run keyword automations without it.

So the real shape of "is ManyChat free" is this: free for 25 people a month, $14 for 250 on annual billing, and $29 before the AI shows up. For a creator whose comments are alive, the free plan is a doorway to a metered bill, not an alternative to one.

Free ManyChat alternatives with bigger free tiers

If the question behind "is ManyChat free" is really "can I run comment-to-DM without paying", the honest answer is yes, just probably not with ManyChat. A pack of smaller Instagram-first tools offers permanent free tiers many times the size of ManyChat's 25 contacts. All numbers below come from each tool's own pricing page, checked July 2026.

  • ReplyRush: free for 1,500 DMs per month, on Instagram and Facebook. The biggest free tier in the pack. Its AI covers common DMs; the core is templates, not replies trained on your voice. Full comparison in BetterSocials vs ReplyRush.
  • LinkDM: free for 1,000 DMs per month on one account, Instagram and Facebook. Keyword triggers with template replies; there is no AI reply writing. Full comparison in BetterSocials vs LinkDM.
  • CreatorFlow: free for 500 DMs per month on one account, Instagram only. One template per automation, no AI replies.
  • InstantDM: free for 500 credits per month, Instagram and Facebook. The exception on AI: it ships real LLM replies, in its own words "AI Agents powered by ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini", though they are not trained on your voice.

Meta's own Business Suite also includes free inbox automations on its platforms, which deserves its own article rather than a paragraph here. And a plain word in the pack's favor: if Instagram is genuinely your whole business and your volume fits under these caps, the free tiers above are permanent and larger than anything ManyChat offers. Use one.

BetterSocialsNone; 7-day trial, then flat from $29 with unlimited contactsInstagram, Facebook, YouTube, Threads, LinkedIn, email on Pro and TeamYes, in your voice, on every tier
ManyChat25 active contacts per monthAny two of Instagram, TikTok, Messenger, TelegramNo; AI starts at $29 per month (annual billing)

LinkDM1,000 DMs per monthInstagram, FacebookNo; keyword and templates
CreatorFlow500 DMs per monthInstagram onlyNo; one template per automation
InstantDM500 credits per monthInstagram, FacebookYes, LLM replies, not voice trained

Notice what every free tier in that table shares, ManyChat's included. Each one is capped in the exact dimension a growing creator grows in: contacts, DMs, or credits. And none of the free tools covers YouTube, Threads, or LinkedIn at all, so the moment your audience talks to you on more than Instagram and Facebook, no free tier answers them. That is the boundary where BetterSocials starts making sense.

BetterSocials has no free tier, and here is the trade

Plainly: BetterSocials is not free. There is a 7-day free trial with a card required, and you can cancel in-app anytime, but after that it costs money. Creator is $29 per month, and the first 100 founding members lock $19 per month for life. New purchases carry a 30-day money-back guarantee.

What that money buys is the opposite of everything above. Contacts are unlimited on every plan, so there is no meter, no overage rate, and no month where a post doing well shows up on your invoice. The Reel that spends ManyChat's free plan by lunchtime is, on BetterSocials, just a good day. AI replies drafted in your voice come with every tier, including the $19 founding plan, not gated behind a $29 step. And the channel list is built for where creators actually get talked to: Instagram comments and DMs, Facebook comments and DMs, YouTube comments, Threads comments, LinkedIn page comments and personal DMs, plus Gmail and Outlook on Pro and Team, all in one inbox. You write a keyword and a message once, with no flow builder, and it is live.

The reason we skipped the free tier is the same reason this article could quantify everyone else's: a capped free plan is a marketing expense that has to convert, and the cap is where the pressure goes. We would rather you pay a flat, boring price from day one, or not pay us at all, than start free and meet a meter later. Whether that trade is worth it depends entirely on where your audience is, which is the last question.

The honest answer, by situation

Stay on ManyChat free if

You are testing whether comment-to-DM fits your content at all. Twenty-five contacts is enough to watch the mechanic work once, and it costs nothing. Just decide what happens at contact 26 before it happens. If you are weighing the paid tiers next, read is ManyChat worth it first.

Pick a free Instagram tool if

Instagram, or Instagram plus Facebook, is your entire business and your volume sits under the caps. ReplyRush's 1,500 free DMs per month is the most room anyone gives you, and for a small single-platform account it is genuinely enough.

Pick BetterSocials if

Your audience spans more than one platform, YouTube is in the mix, or you have already hit a free tier's ceiling and felt the meter start. At that point free was never the real price, and $19 to $29 flat with unlimited contacts and replies in your voice is the honest step up. The wider field, paid tools included, is ranked in the best ManyChat alternatives for creators.
